Thought for the day…”  Remember, when money talks it drowns out all other voices.”

Staying in Scandinavia for the photo, but to the Finnish capital of Helsinki.    Helsinki has some interesting architecture, including some Russian style buildings (indeed parts of the city have been used as a stand-in for film scenes set in Russia).  There are said to be 187 888 lakes in Finland and also 179, 584 islands.  Also unusual is that YLE, the Finnish broadcasting company, sends news in the Latin language.  Finland is the least sparsely populated country in the European Union, with only 16 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Thought for the day…” 24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case.   Coincidence?  I think not”.

Staying in Oslo, Norway again for the photo, and a picture of the new developments around the waterfront.    Some interesting modern architecture there, and the photo shows the new apartments from an unusual angle.   An unusually, a nice clear blue sky too !!  It is said that there are more Norwegian descendants living in the USA than in Norway (6 million versus 4.8 million).  And when you see the prices in Norway, then you can understand why so many left !!

Thought for the day….” Living a life is easy; it’s the options in life that makes it difficult.”

A black and white photo today, to match the weather outside.   A photo from the Vigeland Sculpture Arrangement (which I always called the Vigeland Park until I read about it), which is situated in the Frogner Park in Oslo.   Apparently, between 1 and 2 million people a year visit the 212 statues,  which are made of bronze or stone.  All the statues were designed by Gustav Vigeland, and show the stages of life, with most of the dating to around the 1940s.  One of the more popular tourist attractions in the Norwegian capital of Oslo.

The Danish capital of Copenhagen is today’s photo, and a row of terraced houses not far from the city centre.   About 1.2 million people live in the city.  It was originally a walled city, with entry possible in only three places (Vesterport, Norreport and Osterport).  The city has been under siege twice (once by the Swedes, and once by the English).   Copenhagen is often recognized as one of the cities with the highest quality of life, and also the happiest people.  It is said to have one of the highest numbers of restaurants and bars per capita in the world.

Down to the prettiest part of New Zealand for the photo today, and to the lakefront in Wanaka.  Wanaka grew up in the 1860s and was originally known as Pembroke, although changed to the name of Wanaka in 1940.   The permanent population is now over 7000 residents, although there are a considerable number of seasonal residents too, as the town has a busy winter and summer season.  Interestingly, over 82% of residents claim to have European heritage.   Unemployment is under 2% and the town is still growing.  As they say in Wanaka ” life the way it should be”.

Thought for the day….” What is worse than being blind? Having sight but no vision.”

A night shot of the famous Nyhavn area of Copenhagen, Denmark today.  Many of the buildings along the canal here are from the 17th and 18th centuries.   The canal was originally built by Swedish prisoners of war.   The Danish author Hans Christian Anderson lived here for a time.  In former times, it was notorious for beer, sailors and prostitution, although now it is a popular place for tourists and locals to dine out.   The main pedestrian street of Copenhagen is only a short walk away.
