A photo today from possibly the oldest capital in Europe, Tallinn capital of Estonia.  It apparently appeared on a world map made by an Arab cartographer in 1154.   Tallinn is competing with the German city of Lubeck for the claim of the birthplace of marzipan, first made here by Kalev in 1806.    If you take account of all the farthest islands and points of Europe, then the centre of Europe falls in Estonia.  Estonia also claims to have the most number of spas per capita, with 40 spas for 1.3 million people.    The photo captures some spring sunshine in the Old Town.

91% of the DNA of a baboon is the same as in a human.  Weighing up to 40kg, they can live for 30 years in the wild, and live in groups called ‘troops’ with up to 250 animals in them.  One young one poses nicely here for the photos.

Another one of the simple portrait photos that works so well, this time from a market in a small Ethiopian town.   The dark background is just what the photo needed, to focus all the attention on the subject.  It was just a matter of waiting until the subject turned his head towards the sun, then taking the photos.

Thought for the day…” The road to success is continually under construction”

“Life is like a camera, just focus on what is important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things do not work out, then just take another shot”.

Another portrait photo here, taken in Ethiopia in the town of Gonder.   Good light and a simple background makes this photo stand out.  Interestingly, the Ethiopian caldendar has 13 months, with the New Year starting on 11th September.  There are over 80 different ethnic groups there, with around 200 dialects.  It is also known as the Cradle of Mankind, with human fossils going back 3.5 million years being found there.

A photo of a boy in a small village in Malawi today.  Until 1964 it was known as Nyasaland, but then became Malawi.  The capital is Lilongwe and the money is the kwacha (MK).  English and Chichewa are the two official languages.   The main feature of Malawi is the lake, which stretches for 580km.  The lake was originally called Lake Nyasa, which gave the former name to the country.   Transport around the country is a problem, and it is not unusual to see a 12 seater minibus carrying 25 people, plus baggage !!

An interesting photo from inside the Church in the Rock, Helsinki (Temppeliaukio Church).   Opened in 1969 this Lutheran church is set in rock, although is only 1/4 of the size that was originally planned.   The rough rock surfaces give excellent accoustics, so it is often used for concerts, and is visited by around 1/2 million tourists annually.

Also today it is a video of a scenic helicopter flight from Zermatt, Switzerland.   Taking off from Zermatt, then heading down the valley before turning left and climbing up over the glaciers, then around the Matterhorn before heading south to Italy, and finally a rapid descent back down to Zermatt.   One of the most scenic helicopter flights that I have done, highly recommended if you are in the area. (The video is also available as a HD option on Youtube )

Off to Tbilisi, Georgia for the photo today.  Georgia is not well known but has been an important crossroad on the east-west routes for centuries.  Home to more than 100 different ethnic groups, it has a population of about 1.4 million people.  It became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991.

CHOICE.   Not something that Microsoft seems to offer a lot of.   Just been trying to get their new Outlook mail to work properly.   For some reason, Microsoft decided that everybody using Hotmail would like to use Outlook instead (=wrong).   No choice given, it was just changed automatically.  Benefits…none that I can see.  Disadvantages…..lots experienced so far.  So why did Microsoft not think to give people the CHOICE to stick with Hotmail?    What was wrong with Hotmail as it was?  If so many people were using it, then it could not have been too bad.   But the ‘experts’ at Microsoft decided otherwise.  No choice offered.  How is that for customer ‘service’?

A photo of the Estonian capital of Tallinn, bathing in some clear winter sunshine.  With a population of about 420 000 people, it was previously called Reval until 1917.  About 50% of the population speak Estonian, and around 46% speak Russian.  It became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991.  Skype originated here, and has a software development centre in the city.  Estonia ranks as number 2 in the world for adult literacy, with a figure of 99.8%.    Interestingly, only 46% of the population of Estonia is male, so there is a shortage of men there !!

Up into the air for the photo today and the queen of the skies, the 747 (actually a 747 400 in the photo).     It first flew in 1969 and more than 1450 ‘jumbos’ have been built.   It cruises at 920 km/h and has a range of 13 450km.   The list price of a new 747 800 (the latest model) is USD 351 million.   Interesting, the early versions carried URANIUM as ballast to stop a problem with wing flutter, not good in the even of a crash, as did an El Al 747 at Amsterdam in 1992, carrying 282 kg of uranium in the tailplane.  In 1991, one 747 took off with 1087 passenger aboard as part of Operation Solomon.

Another photo today which proves the quality that you can get from a cheap camera.  Remember that the photos are taken with a normal ‘consumer’ camera, and NOT with an expensive DSLR.    I assume that it is an iguana, although with the colour of it, then I am not sure.  Can anybody identify it?

The cockpit of one of the 5 Lockheed C130 Hercules aircraft belonging to the Royal New Zealand Air Force is the photo today.  These aircraft were first delivered in 1965, but are now being refurbished to keep them in service until about 2020.  Although originally a 1950s design, it is still in service with many armed forces around the world.  Over 2300 have been built.  It still holds the record for the largest aircraft to land on an aicraft carrier (1963).  The maximum speed is 592 km/h, and when fully loaded, uses about 1100m of runway to take off.

Another photo from the archives, and from Malawi, Africa.   Malawi was previously known as Nyasaland, and has a population of about 15 million.  Agriculture is the main industry, with about 85% of the population living in rural areas.  Tobacco, sugarcane and tea and cotton are the main crops.  The highest point is 2438m.   Even though the country is landlocked, it does have a navy!!  Today’s photo shows why you should always keep the camera ready.

“The only real mistake is the one that we learn nothing from”.

Melbourne, Australia and St. Petersburg, Russia have the largest tram systems in the world, but the photo today shows a preserved tram in the southern Swedish city of Malmo.  Interesting to read that at one time, Milan had hearse trams which were used for funerals up until 1920.  Also, at one time, Melbourne had a dog car tram, which was used to transport dogs to the showgrounds.  As well as the usual restaurant trams, they have also been used as a mobile library ((Munchen, Germany) until 1970, and also as cargo trams.  Amsterdam has again experimented with using trams for moving goods inside the city.  And a few cities still use double-decker trams, such as Hong Kong.

A nice simple and colourful photo today, which really shows the quality that you can get from an ordinary, cheap consumer camera.   No need to spend thousands on lots of equipment and no need to carry tons of things around.  Proof of how good cheap cameras can be is below.  The largest flowers in the world are called Rafflesia arnoldii, and are  over 1m in size.  The flowers smell like decaying flesh, and are also known as corpse flowers, and live in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo.  But here is a photo of an ordinary garden flower.

About 70% of the earth is made up of ocean, with an average depth of around 3700m.  It is estimated that the world’s oceans contain around 97% of the earth’s water.  Interestingly, the speed of sound in water is 5 times as fast as it is in air.   The highest tides in the world (16.3m) are in the Bay of Fundy, in Nova Scotia, Canada.     No sign of a large tide in this photo of a rather nice beach!!

Did you know that the population of the world grows by over 80 million people every year, and that the total world population is now over 7  BILLION people?   At the current rates, there will be an additional billion people every 13 years.  China tops the list with 1.3 billion people, India is number two with 1.1 billion people.   The world’s smallest independent nation is Nauru with just over 13 000 people.  And the photo today is of just one of those 7 billion people.
