Photo of the Day Sunday 12th May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” You do not know where you are going if you are always looking back”.

” You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving”.

Off to Helsinki for the photo today and to the harbour market.  The market is around the South Harbour, which handles 5.4 million passengers a year, mainly on the ferries to/from Sweden and Estonia.   The market is year round, so even during the coldest and darkest days of winter, there is a market here.  Temperatures can fall to -30 degrees in winter and the sea is often frozen.  Add to that the darkness and it is not a very pleasant place to be in winter.

Photo of the Day Saturday 11 May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Some minds are like concrete,  thorougly mixed up and permanently set”.

” Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal”.

Did you know that a lion may sleep for 20 hours a day?   Or that you can judge the age of a male lion by the darnkess of his mane?  And did you know that a lion’s heels do not touch the ground when it walks.  The average male lion weighs around 180kg and the average female weighs around 130 kg.   A lion can sprint for a short distance at up to 81 km/h, and in the wild, have an average life span of 12 years.  Lionesses do most of the hunting, as in the photo here shot in Kenya a few years ago.  Not a good day for the wildebeest !!

Photo of the Day Thursday 9th May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Success comes in cans, not in can’ts”     “The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open”

Did you know that 9 major planets orbit the sun?  Or that 109 planet Earths would fit onto around the surface of the sun, and that every 11 years that the sun reverses its polarity, so that the north pole becomes the south pole?  Or that it is around 150 million km away from the earth.  In the 16th Century Copernicus said that it was the Earth that travelled around the Sun, although a Greek philospher Aristarchus had claimed this much earlier.  So for the photo today, a picture of a sunset over the Baltic Sea……

Photo of the Day Tuesday 7th May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….”  Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you have been up to”

” I am going to stop putting things off, starting tomorrow”.

Coral is made up of small polyps, which are soft bodied organisms that are related to sea anenomens and to jellyfish.  They live in shallow, warm waters, and get most of their food from the algae that grow on them.  They also have tentacles that can catch plankton and very small fish.   Due to pollution and global warming, an estimated 25% of coral reefs worldwide have disappeared.  The longest coral reef in the world is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the second longest lies off the coast of Belize.   The photo today shows an aerial view of some of the coral off the Yasawa Islands in Fiji.   Parts of the coral reefs around Fiji have been suffering from bleaching, which is when the rise in sea temperatures kills off the algae that lives on the coral.  For the time being, it remains a divers paradise though.

Photo of the Day Sunday 5th May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Happiness is not a destination, it is a way of life”.

A photo from the Baltic Sea today and the Tallink Galaxy boat, which travels between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.   Although originally owned by Silja Line, the company was taken over by the Estonian Tallink Line.   Although once it was a pleasant way to cross the Baltic, now prices are higher, and customer service lower.    And if you are onboard with a lot of drunk Swedish or Finnish passengers (they go mad on buying the tax-free onboard) then the crossing can be far from pleasant. The boat is seen here heading towards Stockholm, near Oxdjupet,.

” You do not know where you are going if you are always looking back”.

Built on more than 14 islands, Stockholm is the capital of Sweden lies at almost 60 degrees north, meaning cold and dark winters and a short summer.  The city has a population of around 900 000 people, although over 2 million live in the metropolitan area.  It is said to have one of the world’s most expensive public transport systems in the world.  Sweden is also said to have the highest number of Mcdonalds stores per capita in the world.

The photo today is from Stockholm, looking across the water towards the Gamla Stan/Old Town, on 1st May 2013

Photo of the Day Thursday 2nd May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” A budget tells us what we cannot afford, but it does not stop us from buying it”.

“If one does not know to which port you are sailing, then no wind is favourable”.

Did you know that the deepest subway/metro station in the world is in Kiev, at  Arsenalna station, 105m below street level?  And did you know that with around 2.5 million cars for a population of 4.25 million people, that New Zealand has one of the highest car ownership levels in the world…..or that Wellington is the most southerly capital city in the world.  New Zealand is also home to the world’s first commercial bungy jump (Queenstown, 1988).

Wanaka, New Zealand for the photo today, and a beautiful clear late summer evening.  With views like this, you can understand why New Zealand is so popular as a tourist destination.
