Thought for the day…” In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure”‘.

” Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success”.

I read an interesting story in the news about the  ‘T-Rex Burger’ that Wendy’s in the USA was offering.  They were offering the burger which contained 9 (!!) quarter pound beef patties (that makes over 1kg in the new money), 9 slices of cheese, tomatoes,, onion, lettuce and pickles, although it has now been removed after adverse publicity.    A truck stop in the USA is also offering ‘The Heart Attack Burger’ whilst in Las Vegas (of course) the “Heart Attack Grill” served the infamouns “Triple Bypass Burger’ which contained 6000 calories.    One man is reported as suffering a possible heart attack after eating one of these burgers in one sitting.  If you are still hungry after that, then you can try Sonic’s 1200 calorie ‘Bacon Shake’, which contains 82 grams of sugar,  and 79 grams of fat.   Fancy Japanese instead?  Then how about Burger King’s Kuro Burger, which comes with a bamboo charcoal bun and squid ink ketchup.  But what actually goes into a fast food burger??

A photo from Finland today, and icebreakers laid up for the summer, with nothing to do until the winter ice returns.

Photo of the Day Saturday 25th May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Life is the most difficult exam. Many people fail because they copy others, not realising that everyone has a different question paper”.                                                ” Happiness is the ultimate DIY project.”

I picked up a wonderful story in the news about the toilet paper shortage in Venezuela.   Apparently, the Venezuelan government is planning to import 39 million rolls to help with the serious shortage in Venezuela.   Reports say that people have been queuing to buy toilet paper, and in some places, people have had their hands ink stamped to prevent them buying more than their quota.  That got me to have a look at the Toilet Paper Encyclopedia (yes, there is one) where I discovered that in 1996 in the USA, that President Clinton imposed a 6 cent tax on each roll of toilet paper.   The USA is the world’s largest producer of toilet paper.   And did you know that toilegami is the art of folding toilet paper into elaborate shapes?

And for the photo today, a picture of a snowmobile jumping in the city centre, Helsinki, Finland.

I read on the news today that the European Union is going to give 520 MILLION euros to Mali to help rebuilding there.  Is that not crazy when the European Union is suffering from huge financial problems, with several EU countries bankrupt?    Why give away money that they do not have?   That money should be spent IN Europe, not given away.   The EU has huge debt problems, so giving away over 1/2 billion euros is wrong.  I hope that the voters do something about it.

Another photo from Helsinki today and an unusual photo of the seats in the famous Church in the Rock, which is called  Temppelliaukio in Finnish.  It is a very popular tourist attraction, receiving over 1 million tourists a year, as well as hosting weddings and also music concerts.

Thought for the day….” You do not know where you are going if you are always looking back”.

” You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving”.

Off to Helsinki for the photo today and to the harbour market.  The market is around the South Harbour, which handles 5.4 million passengers a year, mainly on the ferries to/from Sweden and Estonia.   The market is year round, so even during the coldest and darkest days of winter, there is a market here.  Temperatures can fall to -30 degrees in winter and the sea is often frozen.  Add to that the darkness and it is not a very pleasant place to be in winter.

Thought for the day…”  Your time is limited but your imagination is not”

” If you do not fight for what you want then do not cry for what you lost”.

Did you know that, with an average height of 1.8m above sea level, that the Maldives are the nation most likely to disappear when sea levels rise?   And did you know that the Falkland Islands have around 350 sheep for every person, or that Canada is the country in the world with the most lakes?   The least densely populated country in the world is Mongolia, whereas Hong Kong is the most densely populated.   And did you know that Saudi Arabia has no rivers?  Or that the country Monaco is actually smaller than Central Park in New York.    And in Papua New Guinea, an estimated 820 different languages are spoken.   And finally, did you know that the world’s fastest train ride is from Shanghai city to Pudong airport, where the magnetic train travels at 430km/h.

The photo today shows the Lutheran Cathedral in the centre of Helsinki, Finland, with some spring sunshine.

Photo of the Day Saturday 23 March 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” A wise man can see more from the bottom of a well than a fool can see from the top of a mountain”.

“You are only young once, you can be immature forever”.   “Everyday is a gift, that is why they call it the present”.

An interesting photo from inside the Church in the Rock, Helsinki (Temppeliaukio Church).   Opened in 1969 this Lutheran church is set in rock, although is only 1/4 of the size that was originally planned.   The rough rock surfaces give excellent accoustics, so it is often used for concerts, and is visited by around 1/2 million tourists annually.

Also today it is a video of a scenic helicopter flight from Zermatt, Switzerland.   Taking off from Zermatt, then heading down the valley before turning left and climbing up over the glaciers, then around the Matterhorn before heading south to Italy, and finally a rapid descent back down to Zermatt.   One of the most scenic helicopter flights that I have done, highly recommended if you are in the area. (The video is also available as a HD option on Youtube )

CHOICE.   Not something that Microsoft seems to offer a lot of.   Just been trying to get their new Outlook mail to work properly.   For some reason, Microsoft decided that everybody using Hotmail would like to use Outlook instead (=wrong).   No choice given, it was just changed automatically.  Benefits…none that I can see.  Disadvantages…..lots experienced so far.  So why did Microsoft not think to give people the CHOICE to stick with Hotmail?    What was wrong with Hotmail as it was?  If so many people were using it, then it could not have been too bad.   But the ‘experts’ at Microsoft decided otherwise.  No choice offered.  How is that for customer ‘service’?

Thought for the day…” If they develop a supersonic train, will they give it a whistle?”

“If ignorance is bliss then why aren’t more people happy?”

Did you know that light from the sun takes approximately 8 minutes to reach the Earth?  And did you know that the famous line in the film ‘Casablanca’ was not “Play it again, Sam” but was in fact “play it once, Sam, for old times sake”.   And did you know that the country of Kiribati is the only country that falls in all four hemispheres?

An icy scene from Helsinki, Finland here, mid winter.

”Don’t be pushed by your problems.  Be led by your dreams.”

Yesterday, 6th February was Waitangi Day in New Zealand.  It is a public holiday held each year to celebrate the signing of the famous Waitangi treaty, which made New Zealand part of the British Empire.  There is still a lot of argument over the true translation of the treaty, and the celebrations at Waitangi have often been accompanied with minor troubles and protests.  Waitangi Day is also the same date as Bob Marley’s birthday.  As Waitangi Day falls in the hottest part of summer in New Zealand, then many people use the extra public holiday to visit the beach.

Some winter sunshine in the photo today of the Silja Symphony boat arriving in Helsinki Finland.  The temperature was around -15 degrees at the time.

Thought for the day…” Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine’.

Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way.”

We live in a moment of history where change is so speeded up that we begin to see the present only when it is disappearing.”

I am still waiting on a reply from KLM/Air France, from their ‘customer service’ section.   They just ignore email after email, and do not want to sort things out.  The good thing is that they will lose out, as no further bookings will be made with them until they do sort it out.   Bad customer service drives customers away, precisely what KLM/Air France are doing.  I look forward to reading about them in the bankruptcy courts.   I will vote with my money.

A cold day in Helsinki, Finland for the photo today, and  photo of the Tallink Silja (an Estonia company) Silja Symphony arriving through the ice.  Sea water freezes at between -2 and -4 degrees, depending on how much salt there is in the water.     The ship (built in 1991) is 58 377 tons and carries up to 2852 passengers between Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland, and has a top speed of about 43 km/h.
