Faces 4 + 1, Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…..” To fail to prepare is to prepare to fail”

A photo from the harbourside market in Helsinki for the photo today.     Nice comparison between the real face and the plastic models.    Even in the depths of winter (when temperatures can easily fall to below minus 20 degrees C) and when the nearby sea is frozen, the harbourside market is still there.   Finland is number one in the world for coffee consumption per capita, perhaps helped by the long, cold winters.    Around the harbour in winter, people sit for coffee in heated tents,  and occasionally fish through the ice using a saw.     In the depths of winter, daylight is scarce (around 5 hours, although it remains gloomy all day) but around the middle of June, it is light almost 24 hours a day.

Colourful healthy eating – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” If you cannot return a favour, then pass it on “.

”  Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears”.

Always good to fill the frame with lots of colour, and today’s photo is another shot from a local market….always a good place to find lots of local colours.  Nice contrast here between the dark skin and the colourful fruit.   Again this photo shows what you can do with an ordinary, cheap consumer camera.  Who needs 24 mega pixels and lenses costing thousands of dollars???

Happy moment near Tibet – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Fear is the father of courage and the mother of safety”.

”  Do not waste time looking back.  Your eyes are in the front of your head”.

Did you see that alarming story on the internet about the British retail chain, Tesco is planning to use computers to scan the faces of customers filling up with petrol (gas) at its petrol stations, then target them with appropriate advertisements, based on their age, sex and demographic profile?   If successful, it plans to introduce the scanning of faces into supermarkets as well.  Is this not Big Brother in real life?   With the supermarket shopper cards, it already has a massive amount of information about personal buying habits, but the thought that it plans to now scan faces is taking things too far.

On a happier note, here is a photo of a happy trader in China, not far from the border with Tibet.  Something was obviously amusing here, but it captures the moment well.   Good lighting and a long lens helped to catch the shot, which was taken during the weekly market.  A simple, uncluttered background finishes off the photo well.

Market Colour – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Vision is the art of seeing the invisible”

“If communication is they key, then why not open the door? ”

Some unusual news on the internet at the moment, like the story that the music of Britney Spears (such as ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time) is being used onboard ships to scare off Somali pirates.   Apparently, hearing the songs remind the pirates of western culture, and the sound of her singing is enough to deter an attack !!   Also in the news on the internet are the reports of an AirNewZealand aircraft skidding off the runway at Auckland airport on a short flight to Taupo.   The only ‘injuries’ reported were to a passengers strawberries!!!   And did you know that the characters in the ‘Simpsons’ shows only have 4 digits on their hands instead of five?

Some colour from the market for the photo today, and a close up.   Sometimes it pays to fill the viewfinder with colour, and to also get in close.  As always, good light makes a difference, as do the unusual shapes in this picture.  And getting in close has helped to cut out a lot of the distractions around the outside.

Moroccan woman – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…..” Knowledge talks, wisdom listens”

” When one door closes, another one opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully at the closed door,  that we do not see the ones that will open for us’  (Alexandra Graham Bell).

More on stupid people.   Saw a story in news about a man in Wisconsin, USA who was arrested when he demanded a refund from a Walmart shop on a computer printer that he claimed he had bought instore.   A shop worker examined the printer, and noticed fake USD 100 bills which the man had been trying to print, still inside the printer.   And if you are bored, then you can pay a visit to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, which has an exhibition entitled ‘my beautiful chair’ where you can lie down next to a lethal injection chair and experience the countdown  (all 3 minutes and 15 seconds of it) until ‘death’ arrives.   The time corresponds to the time that the lethal injection drugs take to work.  Stupid.

Captured by the camera in a Moroccan market, this woman has the traditional dyed hands.   Henna (a plant) powder is mixed with water to produce a paste which is then painted onto the hands, often in intricate patterns.    Henna is also used as a hair conditioner and a hair dye.   It is believed by the local people that henna will protect against illness, as well as offering protection against the evil eye, and that it will bring joy.   Most major festivals in Morocco involve the use of Henna.  Around 32 million people live in Morocco, with the main languages being Arabic, Berber and French.

Mozambique Mother – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” If your feet smell and your nose runs, then are you built upside down? ”

” If communication is the key, then why not open the door? ”

A rather unnerving story on the internet today about scientists in the USA (Washington) who have been able to make the thoughts of one person move the hand of another person.   An experiment, using electrodes on the head of one person, and a magnetic cap on the head of the other person, proved that the thoughts of one person could be used to control another person’s movements.  Frightening!

The photo today comes from Mozambique, rather a nice mother and child photo, again captured with a normal ‘consumer’ camera and not by an expensive DSLR.

Hats off – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…..” Pay attention, it is free !”    ” There is more than one door into wonder”.

“If anger is your most frequently used outlet, then try unplugging it for a while”.

Air France/KLM deserve to go out of business.   I am still arguing with their so called ‘customer service’ for a refund of taxes on an unused ticket.    Their ‘customer service’ staff clearly have no interest in trying to resolve matters, and seem intent on just annoying even more passengers.   I am not surprised that Air France/KLM group is making big cutbacks.  At one time, KLM used to be a good airline (probably Air France too), but not anymore.    Far too few staff working in their check-ins/ground staff, and also old, tired aircraft and crews that also seem to have lost interest.    Even if their fares may appear cheaper, life is too short to have unpleasant flights, unpleasant staff, and a customer service section that appears to be ANTI customers.   Had Air France/KLM processed (or even agreed to the refund) in a reasonable time, then possibly more bookings would have been made with them.    But their ‘customer service’ has just been so bad over the last flights that they are now no longer an option.   The good thing is that some of the Eastern/Middle Eastern Airlines (for example, Qatar Airways) are FAR superior to Air France/KLM.    The unhelpful replies from their ‘customer service’ have done it now.   No more flights with Air France/KLM.  Not just one flight that has led to this decision, but a series of poor flights and poor experiences with them.   I could write a long story about some of the incidents, over many flights.   Life is too short to endure the poor treatment by Air France/KLM.  I hope that they are soon bankrupt.  They deserve to be.

And for the photo today…..some hats on a market stall.   But can you guess from which country?

Carnival in El Salvador, carnival dancer – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Life is like a good book.   The more that you get into it, the more that it makes sense”.

” If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, then what does an empty desk mean?”     ” Minds are like parachutes, they only function when they are open”

Did you know that because the speed that the Earth is turning, that the days are getting longer, but 55 billionths of a second each day?   And did you know that at the North and South Poles, that there is no time (as all the time zones coincide there)?   And did you know that Nepal and also the Chatham Islands have time zones that include a 15 minute difference (UTC plus 5.45 hours and UTC plus 12.45 hours).    And in each day there are  86 400 seconds.

Another colourful photo today, of a woman preparing for a carnival in El Salvador.   El Salvador (population 7 million) is the smallest country in Central America, and also the only one not to have an Atlantic coastline.   It has some very active volcanoes, and also gets many earthquakes each year, over 12 000 people were killed in one earthquake in 2001.   It also went to war with Honduras after a soccer match.   Carnivals in El Salvador go on into the night, with dancing, floats, street food and lots of music, together with firecrackers and fireworks, and of course, lots of colour.   A tradition is the throwing of sweets/candy to the spectators from the passing floats, and also the crowning of the carnival ‘queen’.

African market colour – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment.”

”  Aircraft travel is nature’s way of making you look like your passport photo”

Switzerland has an excellent system whereby voters can call (and indeed, do call) for public referendums on any major issue.   Five have already been held this year, with 4 more to come.  Any Swiss voter can start a referendum by collecting 50 000 signatures.   Even national laws can be challenged in this way, an idea that should apply in many countries, not just Switzerland.  The Swiss have also started a competition to find a new national anthem, with the winning entry receiving a price of 10 000 SFr.   Interesting, until  1891 the Swiss national anthem was sung to the same tune as the British national anthem.  The current Swiss anthem is now seen as old fashioned, hence the search for a new one.

A long way from Switzerland for the photo today, and to an African market.   Sometimes it is very good to fill the frame with colour and interest, and this shot is jam-packed both.  As usual, it was taken with an ordinary Panasonc camera.

Waiting for the Bus – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day.. ”  Coincidence is fate breaking a lock so that you can open a door”

” Dwelling on the past will only change you in the future”.     ” Doing your best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment”

Another company has joined the list of companies that I will never use again, Booking.com         What some companies are not realizing is that poor service will actually cost them money.   To make matters worse, the managers at Booking.com   just will not admit their mistakes, and nobody at that particular company will do anything about the problems.    So they will lose out, and if you want good service, then I cannot recommend this company.   No problem when a company makes a mistake (we all do that) but when nobody will do anything about the mistakes, then that shows that a company is not good.

Off to the capital of Mozambique today, Maputo, and a typical photo of a bus queue there.   Situated just 120 km north of the South African border, and on the Indian Ocean, this ugly, neglected city is home for about 1.7 million people.    Originally ruled by the Portuguese, it became independent in 1975, although Portuguese is still the main language in this part of Mozambique.    Until 1992 the country had a long civil war,  with an estimated 1 million people killed due to the war and famine between 1977 and 1992.    Mozambique has a high fertility rate, with around 5.3 children born per woman.  Transport in Mozambique is often a problem, with irregular and unreliable buses, so the queues seen in the photo today are very typical.
