Mirror reflections in Norway – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day..”  Happiness is no laughing matter”      ” Give up for a second and that is where you will finish”.

Are you happy?  Perhaps, if you are living in Denmark.  Interesting to read the 2013 World Happiness Report, which came from the Columbia University’s Earth Institute, and paid for by the UN.   Top place goes to DENMARK, second place goes to Norway and third place Switzerland.  At the bottom of the list were Benin and also Togo, both in West Africa.      All of the countries at the top of the list are expensive places to live, but this does not stop the residents being happy.     Suprisingly, high taxes also do not make people unhappy, as in the top countries, the high taxes pay for high standards of public services.  And another surprise is that in 8th place is Bhutan, where despite a low GDP per capita (USD 1400), the people are extremely happy.    And as for the world’s happiest people, according to the Gallup 2012 survey of about 150 000 people,  then the top place goes to Panama, followed by Paraguay.

I was happy with this photo that I took one morning recently in Norway.  It took a little bit of planning, and a lot of good luck to get it, but after several attempts, this was the final shot.  For those who are interested, it was taken in RAW and then converted into jpeg, using a wide angle setting on the camera (Panasonic Lumix)

Thought for the day….’ Heaven on earth is a choice you  must make, not a place that you must find”

” Just because you are not sick does not mean that you are healthy”.               ” Follow your heart, but take your brain with you”.

I was very happy NOT to be at Scott Amundsen base in Antartica on 2nd July.   According to the weather site, Wunderground, the warmest that it reached (and warmest is probably not the word to use, rather the least cold) was -61 degrees Centigrade.  It did go down as low as -67 degrees during the day, so probably NOT the place to be.  Apparently, Americans have occupied the geographic South Pole since 1956.   The research base there is at 2835m on an ice sheet that is around 2700m thick at that point.  As the ice sheet is moving, then the station moves by about 10m a year.   The temperature there has gone as low as -82 degrees centigrade.  Due to the low humitidy in the air, it only receives around 20cm of snow a year.  It is currently so cold there that the webcam is disabled!!

And a photo of a staircase today, just to show the interesting curves.   Converted from colour to BW for the best results.

Photo of the Day Friday 27th July 2012 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…”  Faith makes life possible. Hope makes life workable. Love makes life beautiful.”

I have just read an interesting story on the net about a Cuban born man who was trapped onboard the Helsinki to St. Petersburg ferry for 47 days.   He was forced to sail to and fro because his Schengen visa had expired and the Russian immigration would not let him in initially.  Just like the film “The Terminal’  he was stuck between countries.    If you have travelled on that ferry, then you will know that even 1 day onboard would be enough !!!

Off to Japan for the photo today and to the castle at Matsumoto, not far from Nagano.  Built in 1592, although it has been rebuilt since then, luckily the Japanese decided to preserve this castle instead of redeveloping it.    Japan, with a population of about 127 million, has the longest life expectancy in the world and the lowest homicide and attempted homicide rates in the world.

Happy not to be working at the Quality Spa Resort Hotel in Norefjell, and not missing the managers there at all,
