Found another good story in the news about a woman called Dorothy Custer, who is 102 years old (!!), doing a base jump in Idaho, USA to celebrate her birthday. The country with the highest life expectancy is Japan, where men live to an average of 79 years and women an average of 86 years (UN figures). Second place goes to Switzerland, where men live 80 years and women 85 years (must be because of the good chocolate). At the other end of the scale, Sierra Leone has life expectancy of 46 for men and 47 for women. The oldest documented life was by Jeanne Calment from France, 1875 – 1997, a total of 122 years. Jiroemon Kimura from Japan currently holds the record for the oldest man, now 116 years old.
Today’s photo shows a very quiet section of the Transvaal Coast in South Africa. Not so many tourists in this part of SA, but some great scenery.

Happy that I am not working at the Quality Spa Resort Hotel in Norefjell.

About 70% of the earth is made up of ocean, with an average depth of around 3700m. It is estimated that the world’s oceans contain around 97% of the earth’s water. Interestingly, the speed of sound in water is 5 times as fast as it is in air. The highest tides in the world (16.3m) are in the Bay of Fundy, in Nova Scotia, Canada. No sign of a large tide in this photo of a rather nice beach!!

Far out into the Pacific Ocean for the photo today and 2400km north east of New Zealand, to the Pacific nation of Nuie. Interestingly, over 90% of the population of Nuie live in New Zealand, which has the only regular air link to the island once a week. It was the first country in the world to provide free wifi to the country. Foreign aid from New Zealand, and money sent back by locals working abroad are the main sources of income. Sadly, the island has few good sandy beaches, so is not on the tourist radar.
Happy not to be working at the Quality Spa Resort Hotel in Norefjell.
