New looking old, historic New Zealand

Thought for the day…” It isn’t premarital sex if you have no intention of getting married.”   (George Burns)

“Dreams are not what you see in your sleep.  Dreams are the things that do not let you sleep”.

Nice photo of the historic Cardrona Hotel, Otago, New Zealand for the photo today.    Cardrona lies about 25km from the town of Wanaka, on the mountain road to Queenstown.    Cardrona was originally a gold rush town which grey up in the 1860s.   The historic hotel in the photo was used in advertisements by the Speights brewery in New Zealand.   Nowadays it is the nearby Cardrona ski area which attracts tourists, although now that the road to Queenstown is sealed all the way, then the route through Cardrona is much busier.  Occasionally you still see people panning for gold in the nearby river.   The photo was taken in colour, then selectively changed to black and white.

Beers of the world.

Thought for the day…” If you want the rainbow then you have to put up with the rain”   (Dolly Parton)

” No-one can make you feel inferior without your consent”.

Next time you feel like a beer, then spare a thought for beer drinkers in Iceland.    There the Stedji brewery is offering a special beer to quench your thirst, made from smoked whale’s testicles.     Apparently it is an ancient Icelandic tradition to cure, smoke and then salt these parts of whales.   Whale meat is found on the menu in Icelandic restaurants, and is claimed to be healthy due to its high protein content and low fat.  The beer, which is 5.2% alcohol, will only be sold in Iceland.

A perfect autumn day at Lake Wanaka, New Zealand for the photo today….clear air and still conditions made photos like these very easy…..

Photo of the Day Sunday 2nd December – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell

Thought for the day….” What is worse than being blind? Having sight but no vision.”

A night shot of the famous Nyhavn area of Copenhagen, Denmark today.  Many of the buildings along the canal here are from the 17th and 18th centuries.   The canal was originally built by Swedish prisoners of war.   The Danish author Hans Christian Anderson lived here for a time.  In former times, it was notorious for beer, sailors and prostitution, although now it is a popular place for tourists and locals to dine out.   The main pedestrian street of Copenhagen is only a short walk away.

Happy not to be working at the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell
