Thought for the day…..”If you cannot do great things then do small things in a great way”

“Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations”.

So the crazy ‘security’ people in the good old USA have now decided that the humble Kindle e-book reader cannot be taken onboard flights from certain countries, nor a laptop, digital camera or tablet.   Yet people flying from some other countries CAN take the exact same items.    Just another sign of how stupid the USA has become.    And I am even more surprised that the travelling public in the USA is putting up with more and more of this nonsense.  Nothing to do with security, just a way for the Department of Homeland ‘Security’  to exercise even more control over people, without making flying any safer.    Even Australia is now making the use of the naked body scanners compulsory, with no opt-out option,  yet another intrusion into personal privacy and personal rights.     Based on these stupid, groundless ‘security’ procedures ( security scam would be another way to describe it)  then I will continue to avoid the USA, UK and Australia.    Airport procedures now are beyond reasonable.

A photo of the west Norwegian city of Bergen, taken from Mt. Floyen in perfect light.  Again great colours from the Fuji camera, taken as a jpeg.

and another photo….the fishing town of Vardo, Norway.    This is the easternmost town in Norway, and actually lies further East then Istanbul or Kiev !!  One of the town’s slogans is ‘Eternal light, Eternal Night’,  which is a reference to the 24 hours of constant daylight during summer, and the 24 hours of constant darkness during Winter.    The Russian border is only a few km away across the bay.

Overcrowded and full, New Zealand

Thought for the day..”There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.”

“Some people are so afraid to die that they never begin to live.”

New Zealand continues to be overrun with tourists.   Whilst the tourist board seems to think that ever increasing numbers of tourists are a wonderful thing, those people who are in New Zealand are now seeing the effects over too many tourists.   Accommodation is full in many places, cafes are packed out, roads are busier than they have ever been (=more accidents)  and the national parks and nature are suffering (and suffering is the word) from the onslaught.    And there is no end in sight.     Airlines are putting on more and more flights (particularly from China) and are upping frequencies.     Trying to get reservations for accommodation at the moment is a nightmare and the once quiet country is now far from quiet and unspoilt.

The number of tourists has now passed 3.42 million a year, (population of NZ is about 4.7 million), and is growing by over 10%.     So the overcrowding at the popular tourists sights is becoming serious.     This also means that the nature and wildlife is suffering too.    Imagine driving into Milford Sound (which is in a national park) and arriving before 0900 only to find that ALL parking was already full and that officials were telling arriving motorists to turn around and drive out again.

And the worst part…..there is no end in sight.   Quiet, peaceful and quaint it might once have been.   Not now.

Today’s photo comes from the Old Town in Bergen, Norway.    It started out as a quick snapshot in colour, and was converted to B&W.    Just lucky that there was somebody in the sunlight in the ideal position.   Another reason why it is good to always have the camera ready.

Thought for the day….”Learn to appreciate everything that you HAVE, before time makes you appreciate what you HAD”

“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently” (Henry Ford).

What a wonderful story in the news in the last few days….in Wigan, England before the annual ‘World Pie Eating championships’,  a meat pie was launched into space to see if the effects of space would make it easier to eat.    The pie was attached to a weather balloon, and reached almost 100 000 feet.    What is nice is that the launch site was outside a local pub in Wigan.   The makers of the pie were happy to see their pies tested in space, and the ‘experiment’ was monitored using a camera attached to the balloon.    During the World Pie Eating championships in 2007, the competition was almost ruined when a dog belonging to one of the competitors ate 20 pies and damaged another 10 pies before the competition started, thus leaving the competion short of pies.

Both from Bergen, buildings & bridges

Thought for the day…”It is better to walk alone than walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction”.

“You cannot hang out with negative people and expect a positive life”.

Winter is a great time to sit inside and sort out the thousands of photos.   In the last century, in the days of 35mm film, you were very careful before you took a photo because you only had 24 or 36 exposures on each film (38 if you were very lucky when you put the film in).    Now, with cameras that will take 8 or 10 photos a second, then sorting photos has become a mammoth task.   Before, you sent the film away for processing, and the shop did all the work for you, whereas now you have to download the photos, label them and file them yourself, as well as editing them.  One great advantage of the Fuji system is that the jpegs straight out of the camera are SO good, which means that much less editing is needed.    Still got FAR too many photos though, but at least I am spending much less time on editing now.    Two photos from the city centre in Bergen, Norway, both taken earlier this year with the Fuji X-T10 camera and standard 18-55mm kit lens.

Oslo airport – a disgrace for Norway and for Scandinavia.

Thought for the day…” You may delay, but time will not”  (Benjamin Franklin)

“We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.” (Martin Luther King).

Because of work, I have to travel a lot, and recently had the misfortune (and misfortune is the word) to travel through Oslo airport (code OSL) again.   It is an absolute disgrace for Norway and for Scandinavia.   Not only is it far too small for the numbers of passengers now using it, but the facilities there are hopeless.   The management there have seen fit to remove most of the chairs, which means that many waiting passengers must sit on the floor (and remember that this is in Norway, which is supposed to be a civilised country).   They have found space to display dumb sculptures (such as the famous bent penis sculpture) but claim to have insufficient space for seats.   And despite their claims of a lack of space for seats, they have been able to greatly enlarge the size of the tax free shop.   So whilst passengers may end up sitting on the floor, the airport does not care.     If you have come off a long flight, then do not bother to look for somewhere to get a shower.   There is nowhere.

And this is the 21st century.   Most travellers now carry mobile phones, tablets etc. all of which need charging.    But try finding sockets in Oslo airport.   And if you have a long wait for a flight, then do not count on finding much to do at the airport….things like TVs to watch or any other facilities that good airports (such as Singapore) provide for waiting passengers.  So, while you are sitting on the floor waiting for your flight with nothing to do, then remember that you are paying to use the airport.   Things are so unpleasant at Oslo OSL airport that I am now considering going across the border to Sweden in future to avoid the unpleasant experience that Oslo airport OSL is.

If you are feeling hungry…fast food….

Thought for the day….”You cannot live a positive life with a negative mind”

“Success is a ladder that you cannot climb with your hands in your pockets”

If you are feeling overfed after the Christmas indulgence, then spare a thought for Nela Zisser (New Zealand).  This woman has undertaken the challenge of eating to excess and is posting on YouTube.  Her latest attempt failed.   She was attempting to eat 100 MacDonald burgers in a row.  Not surprisingly, the attempt fails, and she ‘only’ managed to eat 45 burgers.  Apparently, after eating 45 of them, she said that the taste got to her.     The record is held by a Japanese, Yuka Kinoshita, who managed to eat 62 burgers at one sitting.   Also in the news this week is that the world’s heaviest man, Andres Sepulveda (Mexico) had died at the age of 38.  His weight had been as high as 450kg.  What will your New Year’s Resolution be????

Peaceful Swiss Alps – Gstaad

Thought for the day…”Life is 10 percent what you make it, and 90 percent how you take it”

“We learn the ropes of life by untying the knots”.

Did you know that there are 4 official languages in Switzerland (Swiss German, French, Italian and Romansh)?  Swiss German is the main language, with about 64% of the population using it.   And did you know that the abbreviation for Switzerland, CH comes from Confoederatio Helvetica, which is latin, and was chosen as a neutral alternative to using one of the 4 official languages.  It has the second highest life expectancy in the world (Japan is first), and also a high divorce rate (around 43%).  The wrist watch was invented here in 1868 (Patek Philippe).  The photo today is of the Swiss town of Gstaad, in the southwest of the country.  About 9200 people live in this expensive resort, home to the famous such as Julie Andrews, Bernie Ecclestone and previously Roger Moore, Elisabeth Taylor and Roman Polanski.  It looks very quiet in the photo though……

Squeezed all ways

Thought for the day…”A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer”.

” Those who do not learn the lessons of history are bound to repeat them”.

I was sad to see that one of my favourite airlines, SWISS Airlines, is falling into the trap that some other airlines have already slipped into.    Swiss Airlines, who are normally very good, have announced details of their new cabin layout for the 777 W aircraft.    As one of those people who travel economy, I was sad to see that they are going to squeeze in 10 abreast economy seating (3+4+4).    Airlines such as Emirates had already done this, but now Swiss are going to as well.  Not only are economy class passengers squeezed for leg room, but now they are also going to be squeezed for shoulder space too.    Add to this the fact that Swiss (part of the Lufthansa group) also charge for selecting a seat in advance (25 euros approximately for each long haul flight), then the benefits of paying more for this airline disappear.    I have so far avoided airlines which squeeze 10 abreast seating on the 777, and it will certainly influence my choice of Swiss in future.   10 abreast is just not pleasant for a long haul flight, and a charge of about 25 euros to reserve a seat is just another nail in the coffin.

Christmas Fireworks in Bergen, Norway

Thought for the day…” You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to them”

”  Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but rather playing a bad hand well”.

Two photos of the Christmas fireworks in Bergen, on the west coast of Norway.  About 275 000 people live in Bergen, which is the second largest city in Norway after Oslo, the capital.   Shipping, oil industry and touristm are the main industries here.  It is known as the city of 7 mountains, one of which was used to get the photos of the Christmas fireworks.  These mountains mean that Bergen gets a lot of rain, with about 2.25m a year.   In the lower part of the photo you can see the lake in the city centre from where the fireworks were launched, complete with a large Christmas tree.   Fireworks are believed to have originated in China over 2000 years ago, from where 90% of all fireworks now come from.   Interestingly, on New Year’s Eve in 2002 in Zurich, Switzerland, a chocolate firework was fired containing 60kg of  Callier Swiss chocolates !! No such luck for the citizens of Bergen, Norway though!
