Sultan’s Palace Oman (and a toothbrush) – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell

Thought for the day…” Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards”.

“Life is the art of drawing without an eraser”.

Another photo from the capital of Oman, Muscat, and part of the grounds of the Sultan’s Palace.  Unfortunately, the palace is not open to the public, who would probably love the chance to escape the very hot summers that Muscat experiences.   Temperatures in Oman can reach almost 50 degrees in summer.  The sultan, Qaboos Bin Said is said to have wealth of  over USD 700 million.  Interestingly, in Oman, any citizen who has an appeal or request is allowed to appear before the Sultan, who regularly conducts tours around the country.     The sultan is also the owner of 8 luxury yachts.  Perhaps he would be interested in buying all 85 metres of the luxury superyacht ‘Cakewalk’, which owner Charles Gallagher of Denver is selling for a reported USD 159 million.  14 guests can travel for up to 5000 nautical miles whilst being looked after by the 24 crew onboard.

If that price is too high for you, then a toothbrush from the Apollo 13 mission may be more affordable.   An auction house in Los Angeles recently sold an Oral B toothbrush used by command module pilot Jack Swigert for USD 11 794.   That was the price for a used toothbrush.     My toothbrush is for sale (used)  if anybody is interested, and I will throw in a free tube of toothpaste too.

Going home at sunset – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” A nation of sheep breeds a government of wolves.”

Did you know that the first digital camera was made by Fuji in 1988 (called the Fuji DS-1P), although engineers at Kodak had earlier made a camera that used a CCD (charge coupled device) ?  Digital cameras had evolved as a natural extension of the technology that had been developed for recording television programs, such as the VHS tape system.   In 1986 Kodak engineers made the first million-pixel sensor.  Even Apple joined the race, producing the ‘Apple Quick Take Camera 100’ in 1994.  At the other extreme, Fermilab built a 500 megapixel camera for use in telescopes, and the latest professional digital cameras are coming with 70mp sensors.  Progess.

Sometimes you need to take a lot of shots of the same scene in order to get one good one.  Today’s photo is just one of those situations, as it needed a lot of shots before the fishermen were in the correct position.   Timing was so important for this shot, which comes from Mindelo in Cape Verde Islands.  End of another day.

As always, comments are welcome, just find the comments box below and write.

Facing forward – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…..” Follow your heart, but take your brain with you”.

” Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day”.

Did you know that the human face has 43 muscles in it?  Or that it takes 17 muscles to smile whereas it needs 43 to frown?  The face also contains the hardest part of our bodies (the teeth), the hardest bone in our bodies (the jawbone).    The strongest muscle in our bodies (in relation to its size) is the human tongue.  Humans are also the only animals to produce emotional tears.   And also amazing is that the human brain is consuming about 20% of the total oxygen used in the human body.   And on average, the skin is replaced every 27 days.

So here is a photo of a human face, a passenger in evening sunlight onboard a ferry.  Bright sunlight and also light reflecting from the surrounding white surfaces gave great conditions for this photo.   The wind from the moving ferry has produced an interesting hair style though !!

Color Magic inside – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Today is tomorrow’s yesterday, so make it count !”

” Time is the longest distance between two places”.

Some magic for the photo today, and the interior of the Colorline ‘Color Magic’ ferry, which sails between Oslo (Norway) and Kiel (Germany) in around 20 hours.  The ferry is Norwegian registered, and is the largest ferry in the world,  weighing in at 75 156 tons and carrying 2700 passengers.  It has 15 decks, and a long promenade, as pictured below.   The 223m long ferry was built in Finland (as many of them are) and has a top speed of about 41kmh/25mph.  It can carry about 550 cars.   Although it is the world’s largest ferry, it is still small when compared to the world’s largest cruise ship, the Allure of the Seas, which weighs in at 225 000 tons, and is capable of carrying over 6290 passengers.

Not easy to get the white balance correct in this photo, as there were so many different lighting sources, but the Panasonic camera has done a good job to balance them all out.   The photo was handheld and without flash.

Myanmar Traffic jam – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Monday is an awful way to spend 1/7 th of your life”.

” Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get if you don’t”

Did you know that in Finland, that they hold the world championships for mobile phone throwing?   In 2012 it was held in the Finnish city of Savonlinna, where Ere Karjalainen  set a new record by throwing a mobile phone 101.46m.   The women’s winner was Jonna Mattero, who threw her phone 42.47m.  The next world championships will take place on 24th August.   Finland is also the country hosting the annual wife carrying competition, which takes place in Sonkajarvi each year.    The wife that you carry does not have to be your own, as in former times, it was not unusual for men to steal wives from neighbouring towns.   The Estonians normally win this event, although there are entrants from countries such as Israel, USA and Russia.  The course is 250m long and includes 2 hurdles and a water pool.  Minimum weight for the wife is 49kg, and dropping the wife incurs a 15 second penalty.  The prize in the last competition was a plasma TV and the weight of the wife in beer.

Myanmar (Burma) for the photo today, and an old 35mm film that I have scanned.  Interesting photo of a boat traffic jam on a canal.  Bordered by China, Laos and Vietnam, Myanmar has around 135 different races of people, totalling some 60 million people.    Either way, not much is going to move very fast on this canal.

Photo of the day Wednesday 26th June 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” A pat on the back is only a few centimetres from a kick in the butt.”

” If it was not for the last minute, then nothing would get done”.

”  Change is inevitable, except from vending machines”.

One of the complaints that you hear from foreign tourists in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, is about the cost of public toilets.  Not only are there not enough of them, but when you do find one, then you can pay up to 10 SEK (=1.15 euros) for the priviledge.      It is a similar story in Oslo, Norway and Helsinki, Finland, the public toilets are not so common and are expensive.   But in Japan at least some of the public toilets now have Sega Toylet, a urine controlled computer game which is affected by the users aim and the flow of liquid.   The world’s largest public toilet is reported to be in Chonquing, China, which can relieve 1000 people simultaneously.   This building has an Egyptian theme (even though it is in China) and also music and TV screens to entertain users.

Almost back in its home port of Stockholm, Viking Line ‘Cinderella’  is just a few kilometres from the terminal in this recent shot from Stockholm, Sweden.    The ship carries 2500 passengers, mainly on short 22 trips to Finland for dancing and drinking.

Photo of the Day Thursday 6th June 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Dreams do not work unless you do. ”                   ”  There is no failure except giving up”.

” Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts”  (Winston Churchill).

I read on the BBC news that Germany has now lost its longest word, all 63 letters of it (Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz)   which meant ‘law delegating beef monitoring’.     Luckily, there is no need anymore for the word, so it has disappeared.   The longest word in the German dictionary will now be “Kraftfahrzeughaftpflichtversicherung’    which means automotive liability insurance.  Very useful if you are playing Scrabble.  The world record score in Scrabble is for the word CAZIQUES, which scored 392 points.   The highest total score in a game of Scrabble is 830 points.  In 1984, Peter Finan and Neil Smith played Scrabble for 153 hours.

Today’s photo shows boats in a harbour in Morocco.  If you look closely, then you will spot a single figure hopping from boat to boat.

Happy not to be working at the Quality Spa Resort Hotel in Norefjell.

Photo of the Day Saturday 27th April 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice”

”  Happiness is not how much you have, but how you enjoy it”

“The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open”.

Helvetia is the latin name for Switzerland, and the Conferderation Helvetia is where the initials CH come from.  Switzerland borders 5 other countries, France, Austria, Italy, Germany and Liechtenstein.   Home to chocolate, the first chocolate bar was produced here by Francois Callier in 1819.   And the photo today is of a lake steamer on the Brienzersee, seen here at Iseltwald.

Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way.”

We live in a moment of history where change is so speeded up that we begin to see the present only when it is disappearing.”

I am still waiting on a reply from KLM/Air France, from their ‘customer service’ section.   They just ignore email after email, and do not want to sort things out.  The good thing is that they will lose out, as no further bookings will be made with them until they do sort it out.   Bad customer service drives customers away, precisely what KLM/Air France are doing.  I look forward to reading about them in the bankruptcy courts.   I will vote with my money.

A cold day in Helsinki, Finland for the photo today, and  photo of the Tallink Silja (an Estonia company) Silja Symphony arriving through the ice.  Sea water freezes at between -2 and -4 degrees, depending on how much salt there is in the water.     The ship (built in 1991) is 58 377 tons and carries up to 2852 passengers between Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland, and has a top speed of about 43 km/h.
