Good Customer Service – Fujifilm

For the last 5 weeks, I have been without the camera, which suffered a cracked screen after being dropped onto the floor.    Sent it back to Fuji, but Norwegian Post (and there is a company who deserves to go out of business if ever there was one)  took 9 days to get it to an address near Oslo.   Then, after that delay, the camera got delayed for weeks due to the virus in the TNT Courier computer systems.   TNT seemed unable to get the camera delivered, and it just sat there for weeks, getting nowhere near the repair shop.   But here is the happy ending….Fuji (who are normally very good with customer service and backup) have offered to send me a new camera.  That was something that I did not expect, but it is good to know that there is good customer service around.   The feedback online is also good for Fuji, as other users have also written about similar good treatment.    So I am happy to continue using Fuji, just have to wait a little longer (now over 5 weeks) for the replacement to arrive.   Then back to photographing again.

Back in 2008, Singapore Airlines (one of the World’s great airlines) were still using 747s on the route from Zurich to Singapore.  The ‘Queen of the Skies’, weighing almost 400 tonnes,  is seen here taking off on 23rd May 2008 for the 10 294km journey back to its’ home base.  Flight time was around 12 hours and 10 minutes.

Worse service on the airlines, and more to come

It is amazing that so many people are still choosing to fly with airlines, as a new round of cuts in services are leaked in the press.  The Hong Kong based  Cathay Pacific Airlines has announced that it too will follow the trend and squeeze in 10 across seating on its Boeing 777 services (the aircraft was designed for 9 across, so the change to 10 across will mean even less shoulder room).  There is also talk about going to 11 across onboard the A380, with the same result, less shoulder room for passengers.  And following on from that announcement, it seems that the Lufthansa group will move towards a ‘buy on board’ system for food.   It is being trialed at the moment, and apparently SWISS airlines (part of the Lufthansa group) are also going to trial a buy on board system.    Here is an example of one of the ‘meals’ that was served on a Lufthansa flight not long ago…about 100g of cheese and bread.   No plate, no meat and no other food.

So even before they start charging for food onboard, then they had almost cut out the included ‘meals’.  Earlier there was the news that British Airways were going to reduce the seating pitch onboard, meaning that their passengers would have LESS leg room than those on Ryanair.    And Lufthansa have also followed the trend by squeezing in more passengers on their new Airbus A320 NEO aircraft.   They have also removed one of the toilets (to fit in more seats) and made the remaining toilet even smaller.   Less leg room, less shoulder room and now even less food onboard.     The airlines mileage/frequent flyer programmes have been devalued so much that they are now virtually worthless, so the question is, is there any point now to choose one of the original airlines over the budget alternatives? Seems not.   You often have to pay for checked-in baggage, advance seat selection and a higher basic ticket price on thee traditional airlines anyway.    So why choose them?????

In most other businesses, giving a poorer service would usually drive people away, but it seems that the airlines are an exception.   Poorer service now, but still increasing numbers of people wanting to fly.  One thing is sure, the airlines that have increased the seating to 10 across on their 777s will not be seeing me onboard.   The limit has been passed.  Economy class has become a test of endurance, and is far from a pleasure now.

Squeeze more in – more cuts in standards at the airlines.

Back on one of my favourite topics..airlines.  I see in the news that British Airways (BA) have become the latest airline to increase the number of seats in its aircraft.  The Boeing 777 will go to 10-across seating (currently 9) and the total number of seats will go up from 280 to 332.  The Airbus A320 will have more seats, up from 168 today to 180, and the Airbus A321 will go from 205 today to a new high of 218 seats.    So BA has also chosen 10 across seating for the 777.  And to make matters even worse, they are removing 2 or 3 toilets from economy class as well.  More passengers but fewer toilets.   Since SWISS airlines also introduced 10-across seating on the 777s, then I have avoided them, as the reports online about airlines who use 10 across seating have been far from positive.    Not only are passengers being squeezed width-wise, but also leg-wise as well.   Lufthansa’s new Airbus aircraft will actually have LESS leg room than Ryanair, and again the intial reports from passengers have been negative. And more of the legacy airlines are introducing charges for food onboard (eg. BA from January) as well as charges for checked-in baggage.    All this begs the question, why pay more to fly with the legacy airlines when the service levels are less?

How lucky is lucky ??

Did you see the story in the news about a survivor of the recent air crash in Dubai?    Mohammed Khadar was returning to Dubai from India when the Emirates 777 aircraft crashed on landing.  All 300 passengers got off the aircraft, which later burnt out.  Mr. Khadar, who works in Dubai, purchased a lottery ticket in the duty free shop in airport, and won a USD 1 million cash prize.   Commenting on his win, he said that his escape from the crashed aircraft was a miracle, but that the money would make enemies.   Lucky !!

Queen of the Skies – the Boeing 747 400

Thought for the day….”Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.”

A photo that is history now….a Singapore Airlines 747-400 taking off from Zurich airport in Switzerland.  Known as the Queen of the Skies, almost 400 tons lifting off for the 11 hour flight to Singapore.    Zurich (code ZRH) is a great place to take aircraft photos, as the authorities there actually encourage people to take photos, and even organize special photo tours.    Great that the managers there have seen the value of photographers, and make it easy to take photos, rather than trying to prevent it like so many airports do today.  Not only that, but Zurich is actually a good airport to fly into or transit, run with the usual Swiss efficiency.     The photo below was taken during one of the organized photo tours, although even from the normal viewing decks, it is easy to get some great photos.

Squeezed all ways

I was sad to see that one of my favourite airlines, SWISS Airlines, is falling into the trap that some other airlines have already slipped into.    Swiss Airlines, who are normally very good, have announced details of their new cabin layout for the 777 W aircraft.    As one of those people who travel economy, I was sad to see that they are going to squeeze in 10 abreast economy seating (3+4+4).    Airlines such as Emirates had already done this, but now Swiss are going to as well.  Not only are economy class passengers squeezed for leg room, but now they are also going to be squeezed for shoulder space too.    Add to this the fact that Swiss (part of the Lufthansa group) also charge for selecting a seat in advance (25 euros approximately for each long haul flight), then the benefits of paying more for this airline disappear.    I have so far avoided airlines which squeeze 10 abreast seating on the 777, and it will certainly influence my choice of Swiss in future.   10 abreast is just not pleasant for a long haul flight, and a charge of about 25 euros to reserve a seat is just another nail in the coffin.

Holidaymakers heading home….time to fly

I often get asked what camera I am using to take the photos.    Previously, it was the Panasonic FZ150 but now I have upgraded to the Fuji X-E1.  Both cameras have their good points, but the quality of the jpeg images from the Fuji is so good.   Far less time spent with editing on the computer now, as the pictures straight from the camera are so good.    The kit lens (18-55mm) is brilliant, and it produces fantastically sharp images, helped by an APS-C sized sensor.    The negative thing about the camera is that it does not make good videos, hence the Panasonic is still in the bag for the times when a good video is needed.    But for still photos, the Fuji X-E1 is hard to beat.  Not perfect, but no camera is, but a great camera.  As many people have said, it MAKES you want to take more photos.   And it does !

The Panasonic has only a smaller CMOS sensor, but does have a 24X zoom lens, and an LCD screen that can be moved.  Initially I thought that a tiltable screen was a gimmick, but after a time you appreciate just how useful it is.   Going back to the Panasonic after handling the Fuji, you realize just how cheap and plasticky it feels, but it can produce some good images (and videos), as the photos on the website show.  But more and more, the Fuji X-E1 is the camera that goes with me and the Panasonic is gradually being retired.  But it is the end result that counts, regardless of the camera that has been used.

Queen of the Skies leaves Zurich – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Another photo today of the ‘Queen of the Skies’, the Boeing 747.   The 747 series has now logged more than 77.8 BILLION kilometres, which is the equivalent of 101,500 trips to the moon and back.   An estimated 5.6 billion people (or 80% of the world’s population) are said to have flown in a 747.   The aircraft in the photo, the 747 400 series has around 274km of wiring in it, and can fly up to 13 500km non-stop.  It can carry 215,745 litres of fuel.  Interestingly, the Wright brothers’ first flight could have been performed within the length of the economy section of this aircraft (45m).   The photo shows a departure from Zurich, Switzerland bound for Singapore Changi, a distance of 10 318km.  This service has now been replaced by a daily Airbus A380.   Zurich airport, apart from being a pleasant airport to fly from, is also very photographer-friendly, even arranging special trips to the best photo spots around the airport.

747 with a history – Not the Quality Resort Spa Hotel, Norefjell.

Watching a TV program recently about the 747 Jumbo Jet, and learnt a few interesting things.   Originally, the 747 was intended as a temporary aircraft until Boeing had developed its supersonic transport aircraft, but when that project was abandoned then the 747 became the big success story for Boeing.   Many years ago I saw this aircraft in Korea, not far from the capital Seoul.   It was being used at that time as a restaurant, but it was a mystery how they had got the aircraft into that location, which was surrounded by hills and big apartments.   During the TV program, a former Pan Am stewardess was interviewed, and she talked about working on the aircraft in the photo, including what had happened on 30 July 1971.   The pilot had miscalculated take-off speeds whilst taking off from San Fransisco bound for Tokyo, and had hit the runway approach lights.  These then punctured the aircraft and entered the cabin, seriously injuring 2 passengers.  The aircraft was able to land despite losing 3 of its 4 hydraulic systems.    The landing was dramatic, including large bounces and a fire from the landing gear, with the aircraft coming to a stop resting on its tail, nose in the air.

Amazingly, despite all the damage, the aircraft was repaired and returned to service, initially with Air Zaire, but later again with Pan Am (but with a new name!).   It continued to fly for Pan Am until 1991, then went to Aerolineas Argentina and also Kabo Air Nigeria before finally ending its flying days in 1999.    It was then used as a restaurant in Korea until 2010, when it was cut up.   Interesting history behind the photo!!
