Black & White or colour….which is best ?????

Thought for the day…” Broken pencils are pointless”       “Jokes about German sausages are the wurst”

Lots of fun to go back through the photo collections and re-edit the photos….and also get rid of a lot of earlier attempts.   Two versions of the same photo today, from the Spanish island of Menorca.  All photos from the Fuji X series….with the standard 18-55mm kit lens.    See which you like the best.  Same photo but one is converted to B & W.     My vote goes to the black & white version….

Two from Trondheim

Thought for the day…”  You can never cross an ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore”  (Colombus).

Off to the Norwegian city of Trondheim for the photos today.  Trondheim is the 3rd largest city in Norway, with about 170 000 people living there.   It was the capital of Norway until 1217 and has an interesting history, including a time when it was controlled by Sweden.   Many of the old buildings in the city are wood, and the city centre has had several large fires over the years.   As well as a university, the city also has some technology industries.  It also has the world’s only bicycle lift (Sykkelheisen Trampe)  which carries cycles and their riders up a 20% hill, at a speed of about 7 km/h.   Riders remain on their cycle, and place their right foot on the special mechanism, which then propels them up the incline (link to the website here….   http://trampe.no/en).  Two photos now from the old part of the city centre…..

Thought for the day….’ Heaven on earth is a choice you  must make, not a place that you must find”

” Just because you are not sick does not mean that you are healthy”.               ” Follow your heart, but take your brain with you”.

I was very happy NOT to be at Scott Amundsen base in Antartica on 2nd July.   According to the weather site, Wunderground, the warmest that it reached (and warmest is probably not the word to use, rather the least cold) was -61 degrees Centigrade.  It did go down as low as -67 degrees during the day, so probably NOT the place to be.  Apparently, Americans have occupied the geographic South Pole since 1956.   The research base there is at 2835m on an ice sheet that is around 2700m thick at that point.  As the ice sheet is moving, then the station moves by about 10m a year.   The temperature there has gone as low as -82 degrees centigrade.  Due to the low humitidy in the air, it only receives around 20cm of snow a year.  It is currently so cold there that the webcam is disabled!!

And a photo of a staircase today, just to show the interesting curves.   Converted from colour to BW for the best results.

Off to Switzerland for the photo today, and to the Old Town in Zurich.  Switzerland has a population of around 8 million people, with about 63% of them speaking Swiss-German.  Around 20% speak French and around 6% speak Italian.   Apparently, there are more banks than dentists in Switzerland, and also more Starbucks coffee shops than banks.  Zurich is also home to Europe’s largest clock face.   According to Bilanz business magazine, the richest man in Switzerland is Ingvar Kamprad, the Swedish founder of IKEA.  The city of Zurich also has over 1200 fountains, with around 1.9 million people living in the Zurich metropolitan area.
