Plastic or Paper? No choice in Rwanda.

Thought for the day…”Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.”

” Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.”

It is estimated that at least 1 TRILLION plastic bags are used each year, and that China alone uses more than 3 billion everyday (3 per person).     If you consider that it takes around 1000 years for a non-biodegradeable bag to completely disappear, then it is bad news for the environment.    The bad news goes further, many of these bags end up in the sea, creating even more problems.     One big surprise (but a good one) is that Rwanda banned plastic bags completely, no manufacturing, importing or selling of plastic bags.   And the results of this are VERY easy to see when you travel around the country.   The Rwandans decided that charging for plastic bags in shops was not an option, as the bags would still be dumped around the countryside, so there would still be a problem.   Medical use is one of the few exceptions in Rwanda.   The results of the plastic bag ban are very clear to see when you visit the country, is is surprisingly clean.    Rwanda also has a monthly community cleaning morning, called “Umuganda”.  This is compulsory for every citizen aged between 18 and 65 who is able to work.   On the last Saturday of every month, citizens carry out public works to clean and tidy the country.   Things like cutting hedges, mowing grass and clearing paths to keep the country clean and tidy.   Tourists often are surprised that Rwanda is so clean, and the frequently-heard comment is that Kigali is the cleanest capital that they have been in.   Some other cities around the world are following this idea of banning plastic bags, but the Rwandans have shown that it can be done and that it works.   Full marks to them !!!

Copenhagen for the photo today, and a cruise ship competes with apartment blocks for the views.

Colourful Copenhagen

Thought for the day…” Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if you remember to turn on the light”.

” A negative mind will never give you a positive life”.

Today’s photo comes from the Danish capital, Copenhagen.   Around 474 islands make up Denmark, but there are also the islands of the Faroes and Greenland, which also belong to Denmark (although are autonomous).  The highest point in Denmark is only 170m (Mollehoj).   Some Danes joke that summer in Denmark is different to winter in Denmark because the rain is warmer.     And did you know that the fairy tale books from the author Hans Christian Anderson have been translated into more languages than any other author? And more Danish trivia….Walt Disney, after visiting the amusement park Tivoli in Copenhagen, gained the inspiration to start his own park, Disneyland?  The famous Sydney opera house was designed by a Danish architech too.   And that famous children’s toy, LEGO comes from the Danish words ‘leg gott’  which means ‘play well’.     As an estimated 320 BILLION Lego bricks have been sold then it works out that every human being in the world owns/has owned 56 Lego bricks.   According to the Lego website, it would take around 40 billion lego bricks to make a column tall enough to reach the moon.   Not made of lego bricks are these colourful buildings in the city centre of Copenhagen…..

Blue skies and green meadows – Switzerland at it’s best.

Thought for the day….” When you fish for love, bait with your heart”.     ” You cannot cross the sea by merely standing and gazing at the water”.

A classic photo from Switzerland for the photo today.  The photo was taken in the village of Kandersteg, near the centre of Switzerland.   Located at about 1200m altitude, it is surrounded by the Bernese Alps which rise to over 3600m.    Tourism is highly important here, and it is both a winter (skiing) and summer (hiking & climbing) destination.  It is also the home of the international Scout centre, with over 11 000 Scouts visiting each year.    Despite having 4 official languages, Swiss-German is the most prevalent, with around 65% of the 7.3 million residents speaking it.  One piece of trivia….there are now more Starbucks coffee houses in Switzerland than banks.   And Switzzerland has the highest consumption of chocolate per capita in the world…..11.6 kg/capita a year.    As the saying goes…9 out of 10 people like chocolate, the 10th person was lying.

Wonderful Copenhagen – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Happiness is not getting everything that you want.  It is enjoying what you have”.

”  The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet” (Aristotle).

Why is there a ‘fashion’ at the moment to make most running shoes in bright colours, or even white?   How long do white running shoes stay white?  Not long.    But it seems that nearly all the current offerings in the shops are just in bright, light colours, which if you are running off road (or even on road) are not going to stay looking good for very long.  Bring back darker running shoes!

Today’s photo comes from the waterfront area in central Copenhagen, Denmark.   Nyhavn, which means ‘new harbour’ in Danish.   The famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived in Nyhavn for many years.   Copenhagen claims to have the world’s longest shopping street (Stroget).   With a population of around 1.2 million people the area has prosepered, especially after the opening in 2000 of the bridge joining it to nearby Malmo in Sweden.   It is said that  Walt Disney, after visitng the amusement park (Tivoli) in Copenhagen, was inspired to build his own version back in the USA.   Denmark is also the home of LEGO, and it is estimated that over the last 60 years, that more than 320 billion bits of Lego have been sold.   That works out at an average of 56 LEGO bits per person worldwide.    LEGO is an abbreviation of the Danish words “leg got’, which means ‘play good’.

Colourful Copenhagen – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Happiness is felt by making other people happy”.

” Every day is a gift.  That is why they call it the present”.

Colourful Copenhagen today, and another photo that took a little extra time to get.    A cold front was going over Denmark, and in the late afternoon, some very clear air and autumn sunshine made the colours of this cinema really shine out.   The tall building at the back is actually the Radisson Hotel, one of the worst hotels that I have ever stayed in anywhere in Scandinavia.   Not only were the staff there unpleasant, but the rooms were also poor, so never again !!     But the cinema building nearby is very colourful, and when the sun catches it, is great for photos.   The photo is actually the back of the building, the front is equally colourful.     Copenhagen has a population of around 1.2 million.  During the 20th century, the city planners introduced the finger system, whereby the city would grow out in ‘fingers’ with green areas in between.   It is said that after Walt Disney visited the Tivoli amusement park in Copenhagen, that he was inspired to build his own Disneyland in the USA.

Photo of the Day Sunday 2nd June 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Live now, make now the most precious time.  Now will never come again”.

” When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be’

Summer is a time for holidays, and that often means hotels.  If you have a spare USD 18 716 then you can have night in the Royal Suite in the Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai.   Or USD 24 550 will get you the Royal Suite at the Four Seasons George V Hotel, Paris.   USD 26 300 will get you a suite in the Ritz Carlton Hotel Tokyo, although the room price does include individual “rain showers’ .

Going up in price (!!) then USD 45 000 will get you a night in the Presidential Suite in the Raj Palace Hotel Jaipur, India, but for that price you do get 1500 square metres to relax in.   A roof terrace and private swimming pool are also included.

And even more expensive….the Royal Penthouse Suite in the Hotel President Wilson, Geneva. Bullet proof doors and windows, a Steinway piano, private lift and 12 rooms to accommodate you.  It also has its own, private fitness area.  The cost?   A mere USD 65000 a night.

If that is not enough then Hurlingham Travel offer a round the world trip visiting every World Heritage site for around GBP 990 000

The photo today is of the guards at the Amailenberg Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark.  The soldiers are the Royal Life Guards, seen here during the main changing of the guard ceremony which takes place at 1200.

Photo of the Day Saturday 13th April 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Do not judge each day by the harvest that you reap, but by the seeds that you plant”

“Thousands of candles can be lit by a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.  Happiness never decreases by being shared.”.

Hot air ballooning dates back to 1783, when Pilatre De Rozier sent a sheep, duck and a rooster up in a balloon.   It was the Montgolfier brothers who took to the skies over Paris for 20 minutes.  The Breitling Orbiter 3 was the first balloon to go around the world, flying a total distance of 42 812km.

A clear evening in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, and a balloon drifts gently over the city in the last hours of the day……

Photo of the day Saturday 19th January 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….”  Silence and smile are two powerful tools.  Smile is the way to solve many problems, and silence is the way to avoid many problems.”

“Don’t talk, just act,   Don’t say, just show,  Don’t promise, just prove”

“Athiesm is a nonprophet organization””

“If man evolved from apes and monkeys, then why do we still have apes and monkeys”

Another thought…” If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect, then why practice?’?

A hat shop in the centre of Copenhagen, Denmark is the photo today, and judging by the prices, not a cheap shop either.  Apparently, the word milliner came from Milan, which was a centre for straw hats at one time.   And Panama hats originally came from Ecuador, not Panama.  Danes often come tops in surveys of the world’s happiest people, which is surprising given the high taxes there.

C60 and C90……There is a whole generation now who will not understand the significance of these, but for anyone over about 30 years old, then they will bring back memories of the early Walkmans, which ran on CASSETTE TAPE.  Some might even remember the C120 as well, a thin tape that was liable to jam up in the player.

And if you are over 30, then you will remember the constant battle of the Walkman to take enough batteries for it to last a long trip. But all is replaced now by the mp3 player……Nostalgia is a thing of the past.

Life is short,

Break the rules,

Forgive quickly,

Kiss slowly,

Love truly

Laugh uncontrollably

And never reget anything that made you smile.

And on the subject of nostalgia, a fine photo of a classic sailing boat, seen here at Molle, in Skane, Southern Sweden.

Thought for the day…” Coincidence is fate breaking a lock so you can open a door.”

The Danish capital of Copenhagen is today’s photo, and a row of terraced houses not far from the city centre.   About 1.2 million people live in the city.  It was originally a walled city, with entry possible in only three places (Vesterport, Norreport and Osterport).  The city has been under siege twice (once by the Swedes, and once by the English).   Copenhagen is often recognized as one of the cities with the highest quality of life, and also the happiest people.  It is said to have one of the highest numbers of restaurants and bars per capita in the world.

Happy not to be working at the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.
