A Good News story

Thought for the day….”The telephone book is full of facts but it does not contain a single idea”

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for”

With all the bad news stories around at the moment, it is heartwarming to read a happy story.  The New Zealand newspapers recently featured a story about a cat in Auckland (which, incidentally,  is not the capital of New Zealand, merely the largest city).    The government electoral commission had sent a letter to this cat inviting it to enrol ready for the forthcoming elections.   Somehow it had not been noticed by the government department that this person was actually a cat.   But even better, the name of cat was ‘Chairman Meow’.   Wonderful name for a cat!!.

Political correctness – something is wrong here.

Thought for the day…”Why does a round pizza come in a square box?”

“If electricity comes from electrons, then does morality come from morons”

If you have visited Sweden recently then you will have seen the large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers in the cities and in the train and bus stations.    Whilst normal tourists need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter, it appears now that the borders to Europe are open to all, and without limit.     Swedish Television has now issued instructions to it’s staff that they are not to use the words ‘immigrant’, ‘black skinned’, ‘dark’ or ‘African origin’  for fear of  insulting people.   The use of words such as ‘white skinned’ is still allowed though.   Is that fair?  Is it not discrimination??  Even  worse is that anyone accused of racism by an immigrant is not going to be allowed time on TV or radio to defend themselves.  And whilst people in Sweden have had to put their names on waiting lists for sometimes several years in order to get public housing, asylum seekers are being put into housing quickly.  Across the border in Norway, asylum seekers are housed in hotels (at public expense) and are given a daily living allowance, whilst Norwegian people have to pay to stay in hotels and are taxed on the priviledge.    Is that fair?

The photo today comes from the lakeside town of Pembroke Wanaka, on the South Island of New Zealand.  A typical morning view of the lake from near the town centre.

Two from Madeira – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Be careful when reading health books.  You may die of a misprint”.

” The dictionary is the only place where success comes before work”.

Despite being known for difficult approaches, the pilot of this Hungarian-registered 737 had no problems landing at Funchal Airport, Madeira.    In the background one of the Islas Desertas is visible, one of several islands that make up the group in Madeira (with the island of Porto Santo being the second largest).   Some those onboard the aircraft will be heading towards the capital, Funchal, whose old streets are in the second photo.   Whilst there, they may sample one of the local special drinks, called Nikita, a mixture of white wine, beer, ice-cream, pineapple and sugar or hike up to the highest point on the island at 1818m.   Although officially part of Portugal, the islands are semi-autonomous, and benefit from a fantastic year-round climate.  Around 265 000 people live in Madeira, although it receives around 1 million tourists a year, mostly from the European Union (especially Germany, the UK and Scandinavia).

Two from Helsinki

Thought for the day…” The future Depends on what we do in the present” (Gandhi)

” Life is the art of drawing without an Eraser”.

Two photos from Helsinki, Capital of Finland.   One thing that you will NOT see a lot of in Helsinki (nor in Finland in general) are European Union flags.   The EU is not popular in Finland, and even on public buildings such as the Finnish Parliament and Helsinki Town Hall, you are unlikely to see an EU flag, just the white and blue flag of Finland.   There is even a cafe in Helsinki which has the prices in the previous Finnish currency (maarka), as even the Euro money is not popular.   Often the only EU flags that you will see are on the ferry terminals, some of the larger hotels and also on the EU Office in the city centre.  Car number plates have to have the EU flag on them by law, but basically you will not see many EU flags in Finland.

The first photo below is from the central Senate Square.  This square, just below the Lutheran cathedral is used for pop concerts, Christmas markets and events (the Eurovision Song contest has even been held here).   The buildings around the square resemble those in St. Peterburg, Russia, and parts of Helsinki were used in the 1960s and 70s for movies based on Russia, until the city council decided that it was not a good idea.

Whilst the architecture and design of Helsinki makes it a great city-break destination, the best thing is the strong Finnish coffee.  Finland is number one in the world for coffee consumption per capita, and the coffee there is excellent (try the ‘Roastery’ on Aleksanderkatu).  Many places around the city sell great coffee from 1 euro a cup, and if you are visiting Helsinki in Winter when the temperature is -25 degrees and it is dark nearly all the day, then the coffee will be especially welcome.

When I’m Cleaning Windows – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Hate is like drinking poison and hoping that the other man dies”.

The photo today comes from the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, and captures 5 window cleaners at work on an office building.   Slovenia became part of the European Union in 2004, and changed to the euro in 2007.     Around 280 000 people live in Ljubljana, although the whole country only has around 2 million residents.   The first car on the streets of Ljubljana, a Benz Comfortable, in 1898, became known as the ‘Red Bull’ because of the car’s high speed (up to 19 km/h !!).  Slovenia has around 28 000 vineyards, or 1 vineyard for every 70 residents.  According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the record for cleaning 3 standard office sized windows is held by Terry Burrows (UK), who cleaned them in 9.14 seconds during the National Window Cleaning competition in Blackpool, UK in 2009.

No sign of any records in this photo though…..

Colourful Copenhagen – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Happiness is felt by making other people happy”.

” Every day is a gift.  That is why they call it the present”.

Colourful Copenhagen today, and another photo that took a little extra time to get.    A cold front was going over Denmark, and in the late afternoon, some very clear air and autumn sunshine made the colours of this cinema really shine out.   The tall building at the back is actually the Radisson Hotel, one of the worst hotels that I have ever stayed in anywhere in Scandinavia.   Not only were the staff there unpleasant, but the rooms were also poor, so never again !!     But the cinema building nearby is very colourful, and when the sun catches it, is great for photos.   The photo is actually the back of the building, the front is equally colourful.     Copenhagen has a population of around 1.2 million.  During the 20th century, the city planners introduced the finger system, whereby the city would grow out in ‘fingers’ with green areas in between.   It is said that after Walt Disney visited the Tivoli amusement park in Copenhagen, that he was inspired to build his own Disneyland in the USA.

Photo of the Day Sunday 19th May 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Follow your heart, but take your brain with you”
“If Something is important then you will find a way, if not then you will find an excuse”. ” One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar”

On the news we read that the European Union is to give Mali (AFRICA, so not part of the EU) 520 MILLION euros to help it rebuild.  Could this be the same EU that is struggling with financial problems in places like Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain?    Could this be the same EU that is now forcing people to wait so long for operations that some of them die?   Could this be the same EU that is cutting jobs, benefits and reducing the living standards of its citizens?   What is the EU doing giving EU taxpayers money to Mali anyway?    The EU has severe financial problems so cannot afford to give away money that it does not have.  It is an insult to every tax-payer in the EU.   It is just another example of how bad the EU has got, especially with the severe hardships that some of its citizens are now facing.  Politicians have a lot to answer for, but I bet that the EU politicians will get away with this.

And with that, I will end with a photo of a monkey.   Very appropriate.
