250 million people – and more to come……

Thought for the day…” Tough times never last, but tough people do”.

I have been reading about the plans for the expansion of the second airport in Dubai, called Dubai World Centre.    Costing some USD 32 BILLION, the airport hopes to handle some 250 MILLION passengers a year, including up to 50 A380 aircraft at once. That cost, USD 32 billion is equivalent to about 3 times the total government debt of Bolivia  Each of the terminals will be 2.8 km/1.7 miles long and will have 100 gates (so a total of 400 gates).   If you have transitted the current Dubai (DXB) airport then you will know what a huge affair that airport is, but now with a second airport (Dubai World Centre) under way, huge takes on a new meaning.   But what sort of travel ‘experience’ will that offer if you are one of just 250 MILLION passengers using the airport?   I can imagine the queues, the wait for baggage and the sheer amount of walking that will be involved.

Coming Home, end of the day

Thought for the day….” The secret of getting ahead is getting started”   (Mark Twain).

“Nothing is enough for whom enough is too little”.

A photo from the Adriatic Sea and from Croatia, with some local fishermen returning home to one of the islands near Split.   Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia in 1991, and is now a member of the European Union.   Along the coast of Croatia, there are over 1000 islands, with the largest being Krk.     It is said that Croatia has the smallest town in the world (Hum), which has a population of only 23 people !!   It is also believed the the famous traveller Marco Polo was born on the Croatian island of Korcula, and it is believed that the parachute was also invented in Croatia in the 17th century.

One of the positive effects of the karst (limestone) rocks around Croatia is that the seabed is often sharp and jagged, making fishing with large trawling nets impossible.    Fishing with handlines and small nets has meant that fish stocks have been preserved, and have also prevented the large factory ships from fishing in this area, so fish stocks are good.  Some interesting birds around the boat in the photo too.

Landing the catch- Cape Verde – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….”  Success means winning the war, not every battle”.

”  To be the best, you have to compete and win against the best”.

Sad news from Ukraine!   I read online that in Ukraine that the authorities there have stopped a man calling himself  ‘Darth Vader’ from running for president.    His plans for Ukraine were to turn it into a ‘galatic empire’.   Despite his name of Darth Vader, he is normally an electrician by trade.    That story reminded me of the English politician known as ‘Screaming Lord Sutch, who was the leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party until 1999.   He holds the record for the number of elections that he stood in and lost (40 elections).  Other politicians in the Official Monster Raving Loony Party included ‘Mad Cow Girl’, ‘Howling Laud Hope” and ‘Catmando’.  Despite winning several local council elections, the party never did very well.   The political party’s last elected politican was ‘R.U. Seerius’ who served in South Derbyshire.

That just leaves the photo for today….and from the archives comes this photo of a fisherman in Mindelo, Cape Verde.   Late afternoon produced some wonderful colours as well as clear air.

Big Brother and something fishy – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Being happy does not mean that everything is perfect.  It means that you have decided to look beyond the imperfections”.

1984 photo

(photo from Infowars.com)   Bad news for all people who take photographs.  Sad to read that a new Hungarian law will now make it illegal for people to photograph other people in public places without their express permission.  Questions are already being asked about how it will affect tourists, who naturally want to take photos in places like Budapest (filled with people in the streets), but also how it will affect reporters trying to photograph news items.   Very bad of the Hungarian government to try and stop photography in this way, definitely a very backward step.    If they start enforcing this no photographing of people rule, then it will be a very good reason to avoid visiting Hungary.    It is bad enough to read about the problems that photographers have in the USA now, but it seems that the restrictions are spreading.   Big Brother/1984 has happened, just that it started later than predicted.  Hungarian citizens may wish to avoid this place in Texas in  the USA though…..they would definitely got caught on camera here….just for entering a beach….

The photo today comes from a fishing village in Korea, Gampo.   Lots of fish and also seaweed is dried here, and despite the village only having around 7200 residents, it is said that there are over 240 seafood restaurants here.   Raw fish dishes (hoe) and also abalone soup (jeonboktang) and grilled seafood is popular.

Icelandic Fishing Village – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience” (Mark Twain).         ” A fool and his money are soon partying’.

Saw a couple of interesting stories in the news.  In Britain, Barclays bank is planning to cut 12000 jobs yet at the same time, is raising bonuses for investment bankers.   According the British Guardian newspaper, the average bonus paid last year to investment bankers was over GBP 60 000 each.   That will not be happy reading to the 12 000 Barclays staff who will lose their jobs.   Also interesting in the news, again from Britain, is that the police there will be able to access people’s private medical records online.  So much for privacy and for the doctor-patient relationship.    There is a good website on the internet which often reveals stories like these, usually very good reading,   http://www.infowars.com         Many of the articles are about things that they would probably prefer that you do not know.

Spring sunshine over an Icelandic fishing village for today’s photo.     Iceland has a small population, around 300 000 people and averages around 3 people per square kilometre.   Its flag, a red and white cross on a blue background is said to represent the sea (blue), snow (white) and volcanoes (red).  Iceland flagThere are around 130 volcanic mountains on Iceland, several of them still active.  The capital, Reykjavik is the world’s most northerly capital.  Interestingly, beer was banned in Iceland until 1989, prostitution became illegal in 2009 and strip clubs were banned in 2010.   Another interesting fact is that Icelanders drink more Coca-Cola per person than any other nation.

An excellent idea to encourage politeness – Not the Quality Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day..” Motivation is like food for the brain.  You cannot get enough in one sitting.  It needs continual and regular top-ups”.

I saw an interesting story in the news about a cafe owner in  Nice,Cote D’Azur, France who is offering cheaper prices customers who are polite when ordering.  A cup of coffee is 7 euros, but if customers say “good morning”  and also “please” then the price is only 1.40 euros.  The idea is to make customers more polite and considerate.   An excellent idea!   Just look around the next time you are in a shop or cafe and see just how rude and unpleasant many customers can be.     And even worse is when the continue to talk to somebody else on a mobile phone whilst making a purchase.   Charge them more I say !!!   Great idea by the French cafe owner, and one which I hope catches on.

A summer’s day in Croatia and the fishing village of Cavtat (southern Croatia) for the photo today.  Croatia is also known as Hrvatska, and has a population of around 4.2 million.  Tourism accounts for about 20% of the GDP, but unemployment is over 20% as well.     It was formerly part of Yugoslavia, but became independent in 1991.  It is now a member of the European Union.  Interestingly, the money, called ‘Kuna’ was named after a small rodent!!    The town in the photo today got its name from the latin language, Cavtat, or old city (civitas vetus).   It is now a popular day trip destination for tourists.

Fishing village in Madeira – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” If at first you do not succeed, then destroy all evidence that you tried”.

”  People can live 100 years without really living a minute”

Have you heard of Charles Veley?  He is said to be possibly the world’s most travelled man.  According to the website mosttravelledpeople.com   he has visited 829 countries, territories and autonomous regions out of a possible maximum of 873.  He is a millonaire (it helps !) in his thirties, and at one time, was visiting over 100 countries a year.   He estimates that he has spent over USD 1 million on airtickets and boat transport.  He says that travel is an ‘investment in life experience”.   His favourite destination is Lord Howe Island off the coast of Australia.

Some fantastic coastal scenery in the photo today, from the island of Madeira in the Atlantic.    The fishing harbour is at the village of Camara De Lobos, with some of the highest cliffs on the island visible behind.  Madeira was discovered by the Portuguese in 1419 but now receives around 1 million tourists a year, attracted by the wonderful, year-round climate and the landscape as well as food.   It is also a cruise ship destination, and a stopover for trans-Atlantic yachts.    The population is around 260 000, mainly on the southern side of the island.  Madeira is actually the top of a huge shield volcano, which accounts for the very fertile soil there.  The famous Madeira wine originated here, using wine fortified with brandy to produce a stronger and often sweeter wine.   The fishing village in the photo produces its own special drink called Nikita, made of wine, beer, ice cream, pineapple and sugar.

Another Autumn morning in Norway – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell

Thought for the day…..”  Do not talk, unless you can improve the silence”.

“Every day is a gift.  That is why they call it the present”.

Two nice stories in the news at the moment to bring a smile.   Firstly, the man in the UK who has set up a premium rate telephone line at home so that when he gets cold-callers and advertisers ringing him, then it costs the companies a lot of money and he also gets 70% of the proceeds of the premium rate telephone call.  Apparently he is now trying to keep advertisers on the phone as long as possible so that he gets even more money from them whilst they rack up a large bill on the premium rate number.     Then there is the other story about Hasan Syed, again in the UK, who paid to have his twitter tweet promoted, advising people not to fly with British Airways because their customer service is horrendous.   Normally it is advertisers who pay for promoted tweets, but Mr. Syed was able to use this system to give his complaint against BA huge publicity.

Autumn is well under way in Norway, and there have been some fantastic mornings recently.   Out with the camera again, to yet another lake, and more reflections and lake views in the photo today.   On the ground are many blueberries and wild mushrooms, and the some of the trees are now yellow and red (not the everygreens of course!).   About the only sound when I took the photo were the fish (trout) jumping in the lake.   The hunting season is underway now, mainly for elk, although also for deer, reindeer, mink and red foxes.   Being Norway, you have to have a license to hunt, and new hunters must undergo a 30 hour training course and then take a test.   Luckily, no test and license is needed to take photos like these.   I am looking at getting a new camera now (perhaps my 5th Panasonic in a row) but seeing results like these, then there is still a lot of life in the current camera.

Photo of the Day Thursday 18th April 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell

Thought for the day…” Enjoy when you can, and endure when you must”

“Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win”.

The colour red can make you feel hungry, whilst the colour green makes you feel less hungry.  For the ancient Romans, red was a sign of battle, whereas in Russia, red means beautiful.   In South Africa, red is the colour of mourning, whilst in China red is the colour for good luck.   Only one national flag is a solid colour (green, Libya).   The ancient Greeks wore white to bed to ensure pleasant dreams.  About 8% of men have a problem to distinguish colours (colour deficiency).      With all the facts about colour, here is a colourful photo

Photo of the Day Saturday 2nd February 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day……” You cannot make your candle glow brighter by blowing out the other guys’.”

“Do not regret growing older.  It is a privilege denied to many.”

I could never understand why so many people stayed at the Quality Spa Resort in Norefjell.     For one thing, it is up on a hill, 13km from the nearest village of Noresund, and reached by driving up a toll road, including a section that is gravel.  Not only that, but in winter the drive up to the hotel is not easy, as the road is covered with snow and ice.     Then when people arrived at the hotel, they paid a small fortune to stay in what I would rate as an average 3 star hotel, and certainly nothing special.  I have stayed in many hotels that would knock spots of this hotel, but why do people drive up and pay high prices to stay here??   True, the hotel does have a small swimming pool and a limited skiing area around it, but if people travelled to the Swiss or Austrian Alps then they could find far better skiing areas.  Are the hotel rooms special at the Quality Spa Resort?  I would say not, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary.    And the food in the hotel?   Again, nothing that would make me drive up 13km into the hills for.   So if you are heading to Noresund then my advice would be to stay down in the valley, save some money but still be in the same area.
