Oslo, Norway – Not the modern, organized place that you think…..

Thought for the day..”It is better to rust out than wear out.”

“We all have ability. The difference is how we use it.”  (Charlotte Wilton).

One of the great mysteries of life is why in Norway, the arrival of snow in winter causes such chaos.  Norway lies mostly above 60 degrees north (parts of it are over 70 degrees north) so is Artic or sub-Artic, yet the arrival in WINTER of snow seems to cause such chaos.   Do the Norwegians not expect snow in WINTER?   Are they not used to snow arriving in WINTER?   It appears not.    As anyone who has been in Oslo recently will have experienced, the streets have been extremely difficult to negotiate.   Pavements have alternated between sheet ice and deep snow, all of this in the CAPITAL of a country that is rich and that is supposed to be modern.     It sure shatters a lot of images when you work in Norway, those images that many people have of a modern, well-organized society soon change when you see how it really is.   And I just cannot but help wondering what the local council in Oslo is doing (or rather, not doing).     The one plus side to the chaos caused by the snow and ice is that is has forced many of the begging gypsies off the streets.   Again, the gypsy problem is something that the Norwegian government and police seem unable to deal with, same as with the heroin problem in Oslo.   Whilst drug sellers operate openly in the city centre, nothing appears to be done about the problem.   Oslo has been called the “heroin capital of Europe’, with the statistics showing the big problem with heroin addiction and deaths in the city, but the authorities do not seem to be doing enough.  Have a look at some of the videos of the problem on YouTube.    So if you have any ideas that Norway is a modern, clean and well-run society, then a short visit may change your views !!

Norway duo – the Fuji X-T10 camera at work

Thought for the day….”If we were meant to stay in one place then we would have roots instead of feet’

“Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die’  (Buddha)

The photo today comes from Svolvaer, the ‘capital’ of the Lofoten Islands in Norway.   About 4500 people live in this town which was built on cod fishing.  Nowadays, summer tourism is very important with about 200 000 tourists visiting each year.   It is served by ferries from Bodo on the mainland and also by a regional airport.  Day trips operate from here to the nearby Trollfjord and also Rafsundet.  Being Norway, everything is VERY VERY expensive, making a holiday here a costly trip.   When a Norwegian is asked to name something that is cheap in Norway, they usually struggle to think of ANYTHING that is cheap.   The words ‘cheap’  and ‘Norway’  do not go together.

and another photo…..the very small village of Urke in the Norwegian fjords.  Both of the photos today were taken as jpegs using the Fuji X-T10 camera.

Autumn in Norway – fantastic autumn colours

Thought for the day…” A smile is a curve that sets everything straight”.

“Silence is not always golden”.

Norway has been experiencing some fantastic autumn weather recently, with days of clear blue skies and very clear air.    With conditions like these then the camera has been very busy….lots of photos and lots of videos.  So expect to see more photos of the autumn colours over the next few days.    The first 2 photos today were both taken today (7th October) near the village of Ornes in Norway.   Yet another day of perfect clear autumn air.    An absolute joy to be out with the camera…….

Fuji X camera system thoughts

Thought for the day….”The hardest thing is to take less when you can get more”

“Talent does what it can, genius does what it must”

Having had many cameras over the years, including Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Canon and Panasonic, I am now in the happy position of having a camera that does what I want, and a camera that produces pictures of the quality that I want.   Looking back over the earlier attempts at photography, I can see just how much cameras and lenses have improved.   I am now in the happy position of NOT wanting to upgrade the camera.  The current camera, the Fuji X-T10 makes taking photos FUN.  It ‘only’ has 16mp, but the quality of those 16mp is enough for me.   I still read reviews of newer cameras in the magazines and online (www.dpreview.com is an excellent website), but is is now just for interest.   I have no desire to upgrade at the moment, and can now concentrate on actually taking photos and enjoying the fun of producing a good photo.  I am not interested in buying a camera that can take 20 pictures a second, nor do I feel a need for a 50mp sensor.     Another advantage of the Fuji X system is that the jpeg photos straight out of the camera are so good.  I have now stopped taking RAW files just because the jpegs are so good.   This means that I no longer have to spend hours processing RAW files on the computer.   I know that some people really enjoy this, but for me, less time on the computer is good.    I have read that Fuji cameras are made by photographers who are also engineers, whereas brand X cameras are made by engineers full stop.   This means that taking photos with the Fuji is instinctive, as well as being fun.   True, the cameras may look old fashioned with their dials, but most people agree that the cameras are much better to use.   And the most important thing, the X-T10 produces great photos !!

Today’s photo comes from Rafsundet in Norway, not far from the Lofoten Islands.   As usual, the size of the photo has been greatly reduced for the internet.  The quality of the full size image is great.

Mirror reflections in Norway – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day..”  Happiness is no laughing matter”      ” Give up for a second and that is where you will finish”.

Are you happy?  Perhaps, if you are living in Denmark.  Interesting to read the 2013 World Happiness Report, which came from the Columbia University’s Earth Institute, and paid for by the UN.   Top place goes to DENMARK, second place goes to Norway and third place Switzerland.  At the bottom of the list were Benin and also Togo, both in West Africa.      All of the countries at the top of the list are expensive places to live, but this does not stop the residents being happy.     Suprisingly, high taxes also do not make people unhappy, as in the top countries, the high taxes pay for high standards of public services.  And another surprise is that in 8th place is Bhutan, where despite a low GDP per capita (USD 1400), the people are extremely happy.    And as for the world’s happiest people, according to the Gallup 2012 survey of about 150 000 people,  then the top place goes to Panama, followed by Paraguay.

I was happy with this photo that I took one morning recently in Norway.  It took a little bit of planning, and a lot of good luck to get it, but after several attempts, this was the final shot.  For those who are interested, it was taken in RAW and then converted into jpeg, using a wide angle setting on the camera (Panasonic Lumix)

Autumn Morning in Norway – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….”  If you have the ability to reach, the top is always vacant.”.

” A single step begins the journey of a thousand miles.”

Did you know that all the gold that has ever been mined (about 165 000 tons) would fit into two olympic-sized swimming pools?   And did you know that if you placed a diamond in an oven and raised the temperature to 763 degrees C, that the diamond would disappear?   And did you know that the total amount of money in a game of Monopoly is USD 15 140 ?   And did you know that the name ‘Microsoft’  came from the combination of the words ‘microcomputer’  and ‘software’.      And for chocolate, the world leader is Switzerland, where in 2012, each citizen ate an average of 11.9kg, Ireland was second with around 9.9kg/person.

Another beautiful autumn morning in Norway, with excellent clear light and still conditions for the photos.   Again, this photo is a combination of many smaller photos that have been joined together to produce one large, high resolution photo.   I had already planned this photo, so knew where to stand when the conditions were right, and I had also planned the individual photos that would go together to make up the large shot.   Again, it shows what you can do with a normal, cheap consumer camera (Panasonic).

Photo of the Day Friday 30th November 2012 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the Day….” The more time you spend thinking about things that could make you happy, the less time you have to actually do the things you already know will make you happy.”

A photo from the Oslo fjord today, and the Color Line  ship  Color Fantasy heading for Oslo.  The ship sails between Oslo and Kiel.  Built in 2004, it weighs 74 500 tons and can take over 2700 passengers.
