The streets of Oslo – not what you are expecting.

Thought for the day…” A smile is a curve that sets everything straight. ”

” Success is simple.  Do what is right, the right way, at the right time”.

One of the surprises that visitors to the Norwegian capital, Oslo  often comment on are the large numbers of beggars on the streets.   All around the city they are a common sight, including in the city’s parks where they often set up camp.    During the summer it is not uncommon to see them cooking in parks and open spaces, sometimes using  the trees and bushes for firewood.    Back in September 2014, the council in Oslo voted AGAINST a ban on begging in the city, another sign of the weakness of Norwegians to deal with the problem.   A newer proposal to ban begging nationwide in Norway was dropped as it was seen as discriminating against Roma (gypsy) people.      The fact that pick-pocketing and crime have increased in the areas where there are many beggars can hardly be a coincidence.    Complaints about litter and the bad sanitation have also increased in the areas where the gypsies are camping, including in the city centre.     Yet the Norwegian government has apparently done little to resolve the problem.  Same thing with the drug dealers and drug addicts who also frequent the city centre.    If you drive you car 10km over the speed limit in Norway then you are a major criminal, but apparently a drug dealer or beggar can get away with their crimes.     Not the sort of Norway that tourists were expecting before their arrival.

Two Heads Are Better Than One

Thought for the day…” The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it”

” The secret of getting ahead is getting started”   (Mark Twain).

Excuse the low technical quality of today’s photo, because it is from a 35mm film photo which has been scanned.    It was taken in a market near  Cuenca, Ecuador, which lies at about 2500m altitude.   Ecuador has a population of over 15 million, and lies on both sides of the Equator.   Oil and bananas are the main export, with Ecuador being the number 1 producer of bananas worldwide.   Surprisingly, the currency in Ecuador is the US dollar.  The famous Panama hat was not invented in Panama, but in Ecuador.   And for the photo…two heads are better than one…..

Early morning lift off – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” To be blind is bad, but it is worse to have eyes and not see”

” Success is the marriage of opportunity and preparation”.

1783 was the date of the first passenger-carrying flights in a hot air balloon, although the ‘passengers’ were actually a duck, sheep and a rooster.  It was the Montgolfier brothers in France who were the first human passengers, flying over Paris for 20 minutes.    Compare this to the world record flight of the balloon, Breitling 3, which flew around the world in 1999.   And a balloon piloted by Vijaypat Singhania (India) in 2005 flew to over 68 000 feet/21 000 m.    Today’s photo comes from Cappadocia in Turkey, showing one of the many balloons that fly over some very unusual landscapes.  If you are in Turkey then the balloon flights at Goreme are a must, highly recommended.
