Now it is SWISS airlines turn.

Thought for the day…”It’s better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life.”

“The less you talk, the more you’re listened to.”

More evidence of how bad things are getting for Economy Class passengers.   SWISS airlines have now announced that on routes to/from Geneva GVA, that passengers on the cheapest economy tickets will now only get free water.  Gone are the  (included) meals and tea/coffee for those travelling on the cheapest fares.   So given that SWISS airlines are using aircraft such as the Airbus A320, the same as some budget/Low cost carriers (LCC) are using then what is the point of paying extra money to fly with SWISS airlines??   Seats and interiors are very similar, and both are going for a buy-on-board system, flight times are very similar, and increasingly, departure and arrival airports are the same.    So the legacy carriers believe that people will continue to pay higher prices for the same service as on a budget airline?  Not me for one.  Airline managers may have looked to the USA and have been inspired by what airlines there have been able to get away with, but I am drawing the line now.    With SWISS airlines announcing these cuts to basic economy tickets (not to mention the devaluing of the frequent flyer points system), I may end up flying a budget airline such as Wizzair in future.   No point to pay more money for the same service.  At least the budget airlines do not try and pretend that they are full service airlines.  Swiss airlines have gone too far with the latest cuts.

A black & white for for the picture today, one from Iceland taken in 2005.

Beers of the world.

Thought for the day…” If you want the rainbow then you have to put up with the rain”   (Dolly Parton)

” No-one can make you feel inferior without your consent”.

Next time you feel like a beer, then spare a thought for beer drinkers in Iceland.    There the Stedji brewery is offering a special beer to quench your thirst, made from smoked whale’s testicles.     Apparently it is an ancient Icelandic tradition to cure, smoke and then salt these parts of whales.   Whale meat is found on the menu in Icelandic restaurants, and is claimed to be healthy due to its high protein content and low fat.  The beer, which is 5.2% alcohol, will only be sold in Iceland.

A perfect autumn day at Lake Wanaka, New Zealand for the photo today….clear air and still conditions made photos like these very easy…..

Icelandic Fishing Village – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience” (Mark Twain).         ” A fool and his money are soon partying’.

Saw a couple of interesting stories in the news.  In Britain, Barclays bank is planning to cut 12000 jobs yet at the same time, is raising bonuses for investment bankers.   According the British Guardian newspaper, the average bonus paid last year to investment bankers was over GBP 60 000 each.   That will not be happy reading to the 12 000 Barclays staff who will lose their jobs.   Also interesting in the news, again from Britain, is that the police there will be able to access people’s private medical records online.  So much for privacy and for the doctor-patient relationship.    There is a good website on the internet which often reveals stories like these, usually very good reading,   http://www.infowars.com         Many of the articles are about things that they would probably prefer that you do not know.

Spring sunshine over an Icelandic fishing village for today’s photo.     Iceland has a small population, around 300 000 people and averages around 3 people per square kilometre.   Its flag, a red and white cross on a blue background is said to represent the sea (blue), snow (white) and volcanoes (red).  Iceland flagThere are around 130 volcanic mountains on Iceland, several of them still active.  The capital, Reykjavik is the world’s most northerly capital.  Interestingly, beer was banned in Iceland until 1989, prostitution became illegal in 2009 and strip clubs were banned in 2010.   Another interesting fact is that Icelanders drink more Coca-Cola per person than any other nation.

Ice gazing in Iceland – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell

Thought for the day…” A smile is a curve that sets everything straight”.

Did you read that story on the net about the Israeli restaurant owner near Jerusalem who is offering a 50% discount on your bill if you turn off your mobile phone whilst eating?   Apparently the offer has been extremely popular, and I hope that it spreads to other places.  Not good to read that soon people will be allowed to use their mobile phones whilst onboard aircraft, so presumably future trips will be marred by people talking too loud and too long.    Why do so many people feel the need to constantly use a mobile phone?

Off to Iceland for the photo and a picture of the ice flows from a glacier.   As the day was overcast then the picture was changed into black & white.  The glacier is visible in the background, and the two people on the right give an idea of the scale.

Modern apartments – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” The dictionary is the only place where success comes before work.”

” Life is not measure by the number of breaths we take, but by the moment that take our breath away”

Recently I was in a supermarket at the checkout, paying for my shopping.  It was part of a large chain, and the assistant (who had obviously been instructed to tell all customers) advised me that the shop now had automatic self-service checkouts that I could use.  No problem for me of course, as I had my credit card with me, but there was a very good reason NOT to use the self-service checkouts.   There were already a row of unmanned, empty checkouts, as staff had been replaced by the self-service checkouts.   I politely told the assistant that if everybody used the self-service checkouts, that so many jobs would disappear.   They have already disappeared from airports (self-service check-ins), hotels are now going to self-service check-ins (fewer receptionists) and most bank counter staff have been replaced by ATMs.  If this trend continues, then huge numbers of people are going to be out of work.   So I am continuing to use manned checkouts.  It may cause me to wait longer, but it will help to keep people in work.  Something to think about.

Off to the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik for the photo today, and some modern apartments outside the city centre.  Reykjavik, which means ‘smoky bay’ lies at 64 degrees north and has a population of around 200 000 people.   Despite being so far north, more than 100 different nationalities live there.
