Video or not. That is the question

Thought for the day…”One fails forward toward success.”

“The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless.”

One of the big decisions that I am wrestling with at the moment is whether to concentrate on taking still photos, or take videos as well.    Taking videos is a whole different ball game, needing more equipment (including a much heavier tripod)  and a host of other bits and pieces.   Not only that, taking videos takes more time to set up and then even longer to edit.

Not only that, but I am beginning to question just how much photographic equipment I am sometimes carrying….a Fuji still camera, extra Fuji lenses (including a zoom lens that weighs 1.4kg), battery charger, spare batteries and trip.   Add to that 2 action cameras (Garmin & Go Pro), their battery chargers, their cables and all the special fittings that both need then the camera bag starts to get very big.     And on top of this, there is the quadcopter, again with its own battery charger, extra batteries and controller.   Of course, the leads and plugs for each are different.

So the camera bag is getting fuller and fuller, heavier and heavier.   Sometimes I think that going out to take photos is becoming a bit like a National Geographic photo trip.    So once again, I am trying to decide whether or not to concentrate on still photos, or to continue with videos as well.   Not an easy decision.   The quality of videos on sites like YouTube and Vimeo is SO high now….what was acceptable 10 years ago is not not, so videos have to made much better than before.

Not an easy decision, and one that needs a lot more thought.

Two still photos today, the first from the Brienzersee lake in central Switzerland, with one of the BLS lake boats, the second photo from the military air base at Meiringen, and a photo of an F-18 Hornet taking off for a practice flight prior to the recent airshow.

Houston – we have a problem

Thought for the day…”Happiness is good health and a bad memory.”

“Prosperity tries the fortunate, adversity the great.”   (Rose Kennedy).

You just have to feel sorry for the NASA astronaut who discovered recently whilst on a space walk that he had forgotten to put a memory card in his GoPro camera.    We have all done that, or have forgotten to recharge the camera batteries, but to be out in space on space walk and discover that you have no memory card in the camera must feel very bad, very bad.     And to make it even worse, the omission was even broadcast, the link for the video from NASA is here –

Back down on Earth, here is a photo from a religious even held in the Swiss town of Brig recently –

The Interlaken (Switzerland) to Lucern express train of the Zentralebahn arrives in Meiringen.

A nice photo of the lake at Iseltwald, Switzerland today on an early autumn day.  Switzerland has a wonderful system where citizens can (if they can raise 50 000 signatures) ask for a national vote on any law that they do not like.   There are 26 cantons in Switzerland, which function like small states.   One record that Switzerland holds is for the world’s longest staircase, which has 11 674 steps, alongside the Niesenbahn funicular.   Zurich often comes tops in the list of most liveable cities in the world, although Geneva also scores highly.   It also has the second highest life expectancy in the world (Japan is top).   The highest mountain is the Monte Rosa (Dufourspitze) at 4634m, although the Matterhorn is more famous.   It is said that Patek Philippe invented the world’s first wristwatch in 1868.   And Switzerland is also the home of the world’s best chocolate !!

A photo today of a German ICE express train, seen here at Interlaken station in Switzerland.   Something of a success story for Siemens who build the train, as similar versions are now used in Spain, Russia and China.   At one time, an ICE train held the world train speed record of 406.9 km/h. Between 1991 and 2006 ICE trains have carried over 550 million passengers, and have perhaps Europe’s most comfortable interiors.

Thought for the day….”  “If it weren’t for electricity we’d all be watching television by candlelight.”

Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!”

The cure for boredom is curiosity.  There is no cure for curiosity.

Fascinating to read some of the items that have been left behind in the Travelodge group of hotels.  They have published a list of the things that have ended up in their lost property departments.  Unbelievable in fact what some people will leave behind in a hotel room…..

  • A winning EuroMillions ticket
  • Keys to a Bugatti
  • A stamp album worth £250,000
  • A box of 200 Queen Elizabeth masks
  • A valuable set of Olympics tickets
  • A trunk of Cadbury chocolate bars
  • A diamond encrusted wedding ring
  • A Persian Chinchilla kitten worth £600
  • A suitcase of vinyl records
  • A set of false teeth with diamonds
  • A Rolex watch worth £50,000
  • A Tiffany engagement ring
  • A pilot’s training manual
  • A Kenwood Magimix worth £600
  • Joseph’s Dreamcoat
  • A pantomime horse
  • 7,000 copies of Fifty Shades of Grey (not all in the same room !)
  • 76,500 teddy bears
  • breat implants owned by a woman who had brought them from America for an operation.
  • and a person who left a $975 Persian cat in the hotel room, despite the fact that she was on her way to a cat show.

The list goes on, amazing  !!

Thought for the day…..” Why is there only one monopolies commission?”

A photo today that looks like a black & white photo, but is actually a colour photo, but one where there is not a lot of colour!!!  It was taken early morning in Switzerland in Interlaken, with a morning fog from the nearby lakes.   A weekend special stream train was passing through on its way up to the resort of Grindelwald, and I was just lucky to be at the station when it was there.  Being Switzerland, even the steam trains run exactly to time!!!    About 347 million people use Swiss railways and its 760 stations each year.  There are over 3000km of track, making getting around Switzerland very easy.

Thought for the day….” Be true to your teeth, or they will be false to you”

Staying on the theme of trains again and some lovely autumn weather in Switzerland for this photo, which was taken near Interlaken.  The narrow gauge train trundles it way very slowly for 7.25km up to Schynige Platte.   The maximum incline is 1 in 4 or 25%.   Popular with tourists during the summer months as there are great views from the summit.

Photo of the Day Monday 9th July – again not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel in Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Good judgment comes from bad experience…and most of that comes from bad judgment. “

Would you believe that two days ago whilst in a shop, I heard them playing CHRISTMAS music?    It is July, not December.   I saw Christmas things being sold during June, but two days ago, there was the CHRISTMAS music.   Is it not CRAZY to start playing the music in July, or am I losing the plot?

Today’s photo comes from the centre of Switzerland and from Interlaken.  Nice, peaceful shot of the riverside, showing the river that flows through the town and that links the two lakes (hence the name of the town, Interlaken or between the lakes).   Wonderful place for a holiday with so much to see and do there, so well worth a visit if you are in the area.   The photo was taken in September, with some good autumn light.
