Now it is SWISS airlines turn.

Thought for the day…”It’s better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life.”

“The less you talk, the more you’re listened to.”

More evidence of how bad things are getting for Economy Class passengers.   SWISS airlines have now announced that on routes to/from Geneva GVA, that passengers on the cheapest economy tickets will now only get free water.  Gone are the  (included) meals and tea/coffee for those travelling on the cheapest fares.   So given that SWISS airlines are using aircraft such as the Airbus A320, the same as some budget/Low cost carriers (LCC) are using then what is the point of paying extra money to fly with SWISS airlines??   Seats and interiors are very similar, and both are going for a buy-on-board system, flight times are very similar, and increasingly, departure and arrival airports are the same.    So the legacy carriers believe that people will continue to pay higher prices for the same service as on a budget airline?  Not me for one.  Airline managers may have looked to the USA and have been inspired by what airlines there have been able to get away with, but I am drawing the line now.    With SWISS airlines announcing these cuts to basic economy tickets (not to mention the devaluing of the frequent flyer points system), I may end up flying a budget airline such as Wizzair in future.   No point to pay more money for the same service.  At least the budget airlines do not try and pretend that they are full service airlines.  Swiss airlines have gone too far with the latest cuts.

A black & white for for the picture today, one from Iceland taken in 2005.

Black & White or colour….which is best ?????

Thought for the day…” Broken pencils are pointless”       “Jokes about German sausages are the wurst”

Lots of fun to go back through the photo collections and re-edit the photos….and also get rid of a lot of earlier attempts.   Two versions of the same photo today, from the Spanish island of Menorca.  All photos from the Fuji X series….with the standard 18-55mm kit lens.    See which you like the best.  Same photo but one is converted to B & W.     My vote goes to the black & white version….

Nicaragua Lake Sunset – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Alcohol is not the answer, it just makes you forget the question”.

” Forever can be only tomorrow”            ” Does age come with experience, or experience with age?”

Off to Central America for today’s photo, and to Nicargua.  With a population of around 6 million, Spanish-speaking Nicaragua borders both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.   Interestingly, there are no street names, and addresses are given with references to nearby landmarks.    Managua, the capital, has a population of around 1 million.   Agriculture is the main industry, although it remains a poor country, with (according to the UN) around 48% of the population below the poverty line.    Tourism is now the second major industry.  The photo was taken at Ometepe, a volcanic island on Lake Nicaragua.”

New Zealand, Wanaka lakefront – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Life is an action, not an idea”.         ” The only way out of difficulties is through them”.

Amazing what some people will pay for photographs.  Take a look at this photo….

Worlds most expensive photo USD 4.3 million

Sadly this is not one of my photos.  This photo is actually the world’s most expensive photo.  It sold for USD 4.3 million at an auction in the USA in 2011.   The photo, by Andreas Gursky, is of the Rhein River in Germany.    Just look at this photo and see if you can work out why it was sold for USD 4.3 million.  If I had taken this photo, I would have hit the ‘delete’ button very quickly.  But some people obviously like different things, although what it is in this photo, I have no idea.

One of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand for the photo today, and the lakefront in Wanaka.  In the background is the 1578m peak of Mount Roy, and below that next to the lakeshore is the Rippon Vineyard.  Wanaka is situated at 44 degrees 42 minutes south, so enjoys an excellent climate, and being east of the Southern Alp mountains, is in a rain shadow.  It receives only half the national average for rain.   Long, hot summers, beautiful scenery and the large lake have made it a popular tourist town.  Tourism started here in 1867 when the first hotel opened.

Sadly, nobody has offered me USD 4.3 million for this photo of Wanaka Lakefront.

The good thing is that Wanaka is 17 823km from the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Photo of the Day Thursday 20th June 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

“Beware of little expenses.  A small leak will sink a great ship.”

A nice photo of the lake at Iseltwald, Switzerland today on an early autumn day.  Switzerland has a wonderful system where citizens can (if they can raise 50 000 signatures) ask for a national vote on any law that they do not like.   There are 26 cantons in Switzerland, which function like small states.   One record that Switzerland holds is for the world’s longest staircase, which has 11 674 steps, alongside the Niesenbahn funicular.   Zurich often comes tops in the list of most liveable cities in the world, although Geneva also scores highly.   It also has the second highest life expectancy in the world (Japan is top).   The highest mountain is the Monte Rosa (Dufourspitze) at 4634m, although the Matterhorn is more famous.   It is said that Patek Philippe invented the world’s first wristwatch in 1868.   And Switzerland is also the home of the world’s best chocolate !!

Photo of the Day Tuesday 29th January 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it’s done, they’ve seen it done every day, but they’re unable to do it themselves.”

“Happily ever after happens day by day”.

“Never go to a doctor whose office plants have died”.

A wonderful summer’s day on the lakefront in Wanaka, New Zealand, with the start of the southern Alps in the background.  With an average depth of 300m and a length of 42km, Lake Wanaka is one of New Zealand’s larger lakes.  New Zealand is home to about 40 million sheep (the numbers change depending on the time of year), or about 9 sheep for every person in NZ.  And no part of New Zealand is more than 128km from the sea.  New Zealand also has the world’s southernmost capital city, Wellington.

Photo of the Day Tuesday 1st January 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Life is like a camera.  Just focus on what’s importantCapture the good timesDevelop from the negative, and if things don’t turn out, just take another shot.

Did you know that an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain?

Starting the year with a photo from the prettiest part of New Zealand, Lake Wanaka.  The photo is from the lakefront in the town centre, looking down towards Black Peak and the Southern Alps.  Just left of centre in the mountains at the back is the Treble Cone ski area.  The lake was originally called Lake Pembroke, and is 42km long, with several islands in it.  It is situated around 44 degrees south, and has an area of around 180 square kilometres.    Great place for watersports !!!
