New Zealand – Discovered

Thought for the day….” Well done is better than well said”.

” When everything feels like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top.”

It is sad to see some of the changes in New Zealand now.   Up to a few years ago, it was cheap destination and was the sort of place where you could arrive in a place and decide where to stay and for how long.   Now that has changed.   Huge numbers of tourists (many of them from China) mean that accommodation and buses are booked out, even now which was traditionally a ‘low’ season.    There were 402 518 international visitor arrivals in December 2014, a  new record, with Chinese tourists being the big growth area.     Compare that figure to the total number of people in NZ (just over 4.5 million) and you can see that over a year, that the number of tourists is huge.      Over 3/4 of the population of NZ live in the North Island.    But the problem now is that most of the tourists want to see the most popular places such as Queenstown, which is leading to overcrowding and booked out buses and accommodation.      This season it is hard to travel with advance reservations, and tourist activities are heavily booked, even this late in the season.    Prices have gone up a lot too, and NZ is no longer the bargain destination that it was.   Prices for accommodation have risen sharply, tourist activity prices have reached European levels, and eating out has also reached European price levels too    New Zealand has been discovered !    So if you are going to visit New Zealand, reserve in advance and come with a lot more money !!   And the photo today is from New Zealand, Lake Wanaka early morning…

Sunrise to sunset, two different continents. Not the Quality Resort Spa Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there”.

”  The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute.   The man who does not ask a question is a fool for life”.

Not so many photos of sunrises on the internet (wonder why? !!!) but here is one taken in the hills of Norway at about 750m altitude.   Deep down in the valley below, the villages are covered by the clouds, but higher up, the sun is already warming the hilltops.   Another beautiful day ahead….

One of the challenges of photographing sunrises in summer in Norway is that during the summer, the sun rises VERY early in the southern parts (and in the north of Norway, it does not set at all (the midnight sun), so there is no sunrise at all in the far north for a few months).  This photo was taken on a very early morning trip to Oslo airport.  If you have not already read about the airport, then have a look here-

Oslo airport is a disgrace for a Scandinavian capital, best avoided !!

Nicaragua Lake Sunset – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Alcohol is not the answer, it just makes you forget the question”.

” Forever can be only tomorrow”            ” Does age come with experience, or experience with age?”

Off to Central America for today’s photo, and to Nicargua.  With a population of around 6 million, Spanish-speaking Nicaragua borders both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.   Interestingly, there are no street names, and addresses are given with references to nearby landmarks.    Managua, the capital, has a population of around 1 million.   Agriculture is the main industry, although it remains a poor country, with (according to the UN) around 48% of the population below the poverty line.    Tourism is now the second major industry.  The photo was taken at Ometepe, a volcanic island on Lake Nicaragua.”
