Oslo airport – a disgrace for Norway and for Scandinavia.

Thought for the day…” You may delay, but time will not”  (Benjamin Franklin)

“We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.” (Martin Luther King).

Because of work, I have to travel a lot, and recently had the misfortune (and misfortune is the word) to travel through Oslo airport (code OSL) again.   It is an absolute disgrace for Norway and for Scandinavia.   Not only is it far too small for the numbers of passengers now using it, but the facilities there are hopeless.   The management there have seen fit to remove most of the chairs, which means that many waiting passengers must sit on the floor (and remember that this is in Norway, which is supposed to be a civilised country).   They have found space to display dumb sculptures (such as the famous bent penis sculpture) but claim to have insufficient space for seats.   And despite their claims of a lack of space for seats, they have been able to greatly enlarge the size of the tax free shop.   So whilst passengers may end up sitting on the floor, the airport does not care.     If you have come off a long flight, then do not bother to look for somewhere to get a shower.   There is nowhere.

And this is the 21st century.   Most travellers now carry mobile phones, tablets etc. all of which need charging.    But try finding sockets in Oslo airport.   And if you have a long wait for a flight, then do not count on finding much to do at the airport….things like TVs to watch or any other facilities that good airports (such as Singapore) provide for waiting passengers.  So, while you are sitting on the floor waiting for your flight with nothing to do, then remember that you are paying to use the airport.   Things are so unpleasant at Oslo OSL airport that I am now considering going across the border to Sweden in future to avoid the unpleasant experience that Oslo airport OSL is.

A photo of a couple, seen in Bergen, Norway.   Not sure which country they were from, but not Norwegian.

Change of continents and 8 flights

Thought for the day…”The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, the realist adjusts the sails”

” You cannot live a positive life with a negative mind”.

Eight flights and a lot of airports separate the photos in the last post from the photos today.   A change of continents, or rather regions, from the Seychelles to Brazil.  Having flown from Seychelles via Abu Dhabi, Berlin, Oslo, and Sao Paulo (plus some domestic flights) then Oslo airport (code OSL) rates as the worst.   It is a disgrace for a Scandinavian capital city airport.   But leaving all that behind, some photos from Brazil….Brazil is the largest country in South America and the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world.  It was named after the Pau Brasil tree, and now has a population of around 202 million.   It has won the football world cup more times than any other nation.  Although Brasilia is the capital, Sao Paulo is the largest city, with a population of around 18 million.

The photos are of the waterfalls at Iguazu, on the corner of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.   Depending on the season, the falls can be up to 2.7km long, and up to 82m deep.   The photos were taken from a helicopter, but if you visit Iguazu be very careful NOT to book on the larger 7 seat helicopters, as several passengers who have to sit on the inside seats will have very restricted views.  No problem from the smaller 4 seat helicopters though, as the photos below show.

Sunrise to sunset, two different continents. Not the Quality Resort Spa Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there”.

”  The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute.   The man who does not ask a question is a fool for life”.

Not so many photos of sunrises on the internet (wonder why? !!!) but here is one taken in the hills of Norway at about 750m altitude.   Deep down in the valley below, the villages are covered by the clouds, but higher up, the sun is already warming the hilltops.   Another beautiful day ahead….

One of the challenges of photographing sunrises in summer in Norway is that during the summer, the sun rises VERY early in the southern parts (and in the north of Norway, it does not set at all (the midnight sun), so there is no sunrise at all in the far north for a few months).  This photo was taken on a very early morning trip to Oslo airport.  If you have not already read about the airport, then have a look here-

Oslo airport is a disgrace for a Scandinavian capital, best avoided !!

Two from Oman, and bad news from Oslo airport

Thought for the day….” If stars give off light, then why is space dark? ”        ” Does age come with experience, or experience with age”.

Here is a photo of some chairs.chairsThese are not something that you will see many of in Oslo Gardermoen airport.  I had the misfortune (and misfortune is the word) to travel through Oslo (code OSL) airport recently.   The managers there have seen fit to take away nearly all the chairs in the departure/check-in area.   What are passengers supposed to do when they are waiting???   Emails to OSL managers got a reply that the airport does not have space.   Very interesting that an airport that does not have space for chairs does have space to put in weird ‘sculptures’ including one that looks like a bent penis (check it out with an image search!!).    So an international airport in the capital city of Norway does not apparently have space for chairs (although I would disagree with this, there is PLENTY of space), but does have space for stupid sculptures that just take up space and do nothing for the comfort of passengers.    But do not worry.  The managers of OSL airport said in their email reply that they will ‘review’ the situation in 2017 when the new terminal extension opens.  You did read that correct, they will ‘review’ in 2017.   Meanwhile, the stupid sculptures remain and passengers are forced to sit on the floor due to the lack of chairs.   Not some 3rd world country, but Norway, Scandinavia.   I guess that the managers of OSL airport will be using the First Class lounges, and will not be sitting on the floor like other passengers are doing.   A crazy decision to remove chairs made by managers who are clearly out of touch with the needs of normal travelling passengers.   I invite these very same managers to come and sit on the floor for 3 hours until the check-in opens.
