A Good News story

Thought for the day….”The telephone book is full of facts but it does not contain a single idea”

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for”

With all the bad news stories around at the moment, it is heartwarming to read a happy story.  The New Zealand newspapers recently featured a story about a cat in Auckland (which, incidentally,  is not the capital of New Zealand, merely the largest city).    The government electoral commission had sent a letter to this cat inviting it to enrol ready for the forthcoming elections.   Somehow it had not been noticed by the government department that this person was actually a cat.   But even better, the name of cat was ‘Chairman Meow’.   Wonderful name for a cat!!.

Political correctness – something is wrong here.

Thought for the day…”Why does a round pizza come in a square box?”

“If electricity comes from electrons, then does morality come from morons”

If you have visited Sweden recently then you will have seen the large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers in the cities and in the train and bus stations.    Whilst normal tourists need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter, it appears now that the borders to Europe are open to all, and without limit.     Swedish Television has now issued instructions to it’s staff that they are not to use the words ‘immigrant’, ‘black skinned’, ‘dark’ or ‘African origin’  for fear of  insulting people.   The use of words such as ‘white skinned’ is still allowed though.   Is that fair?  Is it not discrimination??  Even  worse is that anyone accused of racism by an immigrant is not going to be allowed time on TV or radio to defend themselves.  And whilst people in Sweden have had to put their names on waiting lists for sometimes several years in order to get public housing, asylum seekers are being put into housing quickly.  Across the border in Norway, asylum seekers are housed in hotels (at public expense) and are given a daily living allowance, whilst Norwegian people have to pay to stay in hotels and are taxed on the priviledge.    Is that fair?

The photo today comes from the lakeside town of Pembroke Wanaka, on the South Island of New Zealand.  A typical morning view of the lake from near the town centre.

Jack of all trades, master of none

Thought for the day…”If you cannot do great things, then do small things in a great way”.

“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score”

Just been watching some people using a drone to capture photos, something else that I would like to try.   Recently I was using TWO cameras at the same time, one for stills and one for video.    Had I had an action camera then I would have probably used that as well.    And there is an idea in my head to try underwater photography too, and the wonderful macro photos that I see in the magazines have fired my imagination too.     But I am wondering now if I should SPECIALIZE, instead of trying so many areas.     Video is a different matter, needing tripods, more editing and also a lot more preparation, no doubt drone photography and underwater would not be so easy either.     So the question is, should I just concentrate on getting good still photos with one camera.   Jack of all trades and master of none????

Early one morning…..sunrise in Pembroke, New Zealand

Thought for the day…” Strong is what happens when you run out of weak”.

“If you want something that you never had, then you have to do something that you have never done”.

Currently in New Zealand waters, and at present in Auckland, is a 134m superyacht, ‘Serene’.    One of the world’s largest private yachts, owned by a Russian vodka company boss, the boat is said to have cost some USD 330 million.   Crewed by 52 staff, it boasts 7 decks, 2 helipads, an indoor salt water swimming pool, movie theatre, nightclub, climbing wall, gym, underwater viewing room, and several jacuzzis.   When the Russian owner is not using Serene, it is available for charter.  Not cheap though, as rumor has it that when Bill Gates rented it, the cost was some USD 5 million a week.    No doubt that the price includes a good selection of vodkas in the bars though.

Today’s photo is a lucky shot.   Suddenly one morning for about 5 minutes the clouds parted during the sunrise, and just for a very short time, I was able to get some great photos of a dramatic sunrise.    Another occasion when it was good to have the camera there and ready……..Lots of photos of sunSETS on the internet, but not so many of sunRISES.      Taken in Pembroke, New Zealand, with the Fuji X-E1 camera.

When I’m Cleaning Windows – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Hate is like drinking poison and hoping that the other man dies”.

The photo today comes from the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, and captures 5 window cleaners at work on an office building.   Slovenia became part of the European Union in 2004, and changed to the euro in 2007.     Around 280 000 people live in Ljubljana, although the whole country only has around 2 million residents.   The first car on the streets of Ljubljana, a Benz Comfortable, in 1898, became known as the ‘Red Bull’ because of the car’s high speed (up to 19 km/h !!).  Slovenia has around 28 000 vineyards, or 1 vineyard for every 70 residents.  According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the record for cleaning 3 standard office sized windows is held by Terry Burrows (UK), who cleaned them in 9.14 seconds during the National Window Cleaning competition in Blackpool, UK in 2009.

No sign of any records in this photo though…..

Down the Subway – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Life is the art of drawing without an eraser”.   ” Does age come with experience or experience with age?”

Did you see the story in the news about Peter Shankmann, who was given a ticket for running in Central Park, New York, before the official opening time?  He was training for an Ironman Triathlon, but was stopped by police for running before the official opening time.   He claims that there were no signs, gates or notices banning running, and intends to fight the charges in court later.   So apparently the police in New York have nothing better to do than ticket innocent runners.  Crazy.

The photo today comes from Slovenia, a lovely place for a holiday.  Previously part of Yugoslavia (until 1991), Slovenia has a population of around 2 million.   Around 50% of the country is forrested.  It is said that it is the only country in the world to have the word ‘LOVE” in it.  The capital is Ljublana, which is where today’s photo was taken.    Late afternoon light has illuminated this subway and the grafitti nicely, whilst the two pedestrians provide a nice balance.    A good photo needs good light, and the light was just right for this photo.
