I had forgotten just how good travel by train could be.  I recently travelled down through Europe on long-distance night train, and it was very interesting to compare this trip with the return trip, which was by air.   No early check in at an airport, no expensive airport ‘box’ hotel, and no long queues to endure.  No silly security checks, and nobody on the train was worried that I was carrying toothpaste or liquids which at an airport would be taboo.   No need to check in at all, just board the train and find the sleeping compartment.   Pleasant evening on the way down through Europe, good snacks in the cafe, and coffee that was far better than airline coffee.    And add to that a good nights sleep and it makes a very pleasant journey.   Then next morning breakfast in the train cafe and voila, it was time to arrive (and on time too).   Compare that to the hassle and frustration at airports and being squashed in economy class for the flight back.  Flight back was late, on an old aircraft and delayed even further due to passengers travelling with far too many carry on bags.  Perhaps one day the train will be THE way to travel again…….The recent trip was a very interesting comparison.

Today’s photo is from the central part of Switzerland, with a photo of Swiss cow bells on a woodland hotel.  Very Swiss !

Amusing story in the news at the moment about the Indian army, who thought that they had been subject to 329 spy missions by Chinese drones.   It was found that the sightings were not actually Chinese drones on spy missions, but were in fact the planets Jupiter and Venus.   Whilst I would like to visit India, the crazy procedure for obtaining a TOURIST visa has put me off, along with the time and cost to obtain it.  The Indian government should realize that tourists bring money and foreign exchange to the country, so they should make it EASY for tourists to travel there, not make it an expensive hassle.   Easy decision for me though, until it is quick and easy to get a visa then I will not go there.

An early morning photo of the hills of Norway for the photo today, and a peaceful scene.   Norway has 3 languages, Bokmal Norwegian (the main language), Nynorsk (mainly in the west parts of Norway) and Sami (mainly in the far north of Norway).  There are more Norwegian descendants living in the USA than people living in Norway (6 million descendants in the USA and around 5 million people in Norway).  As in Sweden and Finland, you can only buy alcohol (above 3.5%) in the government operated shops, called Vinmonopolet in Norway.    That said, when you see the prices for alcohol in Norway, then you may well decide not to buy.  Norway is also home to the largest glacier in Europe (Josteldalsbreen)

Did you know that the North Pole and South Pole have only 1 sunrise and 1 sunset each year?   And because the speed that the Earth rotates at is slowing down, the years are also getting shorter, around 400 million years ago a year was about 410 days, although the days were then only 21 hours long.   Even on the Equator, the days are not exactly 12 hours long, due to changes in the size of the sun and atmospheric conditions, and daylight can up to 7 minutes longer.   And due to the unusual orbit of the Earth, then the Northern Hemisphere has longer days than the Southern Hemisphere, with the sun being north of the Equator for 4 more days than in the Southern Hemisphere.  People who build sundials will also know about the Equation of Time, which is used to make corrections for the uneven spinning of the Earth.

I was very happy NOT to be at Scott Amundsen base in Antartica on 2nd July.   According to the weather site, Wunderground, the warmest that it reached (and warmest is probably not the word to use, rather the least cold) was -61 degrees Centigrade.  It did go down as low as -67 degrees during the day, so probably NOT the place to be.  Apparently, Americans have occupied the geographic South Pole since 1956.   The research base there is at 2835m on an ice sheet that is around 2700m thick at that point.  As the ice sheet is moving, then the station moves by about 10m a year.   The temperature there has gone as low as -82 degrees centigrade.  Due to the low humitidy in the air, it only receives around 20cm of snow a year.  It is currently so cold there that the webcam is disabled!!

And a photo of a staircase today, just to show the interesting curves.   Converted from colour to BW for the best results.

New Zealand, Lake Hawea – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…..” Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”           ” Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day”

CUSTOMER SERVICE .  Two very different experiences recently.  The first company failed to deliver an item which I had ordered, but when I sent an email to them to ask what had happened, I received a very open and honest email from the person responsible, in which she said that it was Friday afternoon and that she forgot.  No excuses, no trying to avoid the problem, but she admitted that it was her mistake, and only her mistake, and that she was truly sorry for what had gone wrong.   We all make mistakes, and honesty is usually a good policy.   Compare this to Booking.com    the online hotel reservation service.    After several problems, I emailed them, but Booking.com will not admit their mistakes.   Booking.com sends out several standard emails, and even after these, will not admit their faults.   So guess which company I will use again, and guess which company I will never use again???  Not the first time that I have had problems with Booking.com      and after my experiences with them recently, then no way will I use them again.

Today’s photo shows the beautiful Lake Hawea in New Zealand, on a beautiful summers day.   The lake is up to 392m deep and is about 35m long.   It is 20m higher now than previously, as it was raised to allow for hydro electric power systems.  It lies in a long valley formed by glaciers, similar to the nearby Lake Wanaka.  At the closest point, Lake Wanaka is only 1000m away from Lake Hawea.  Fishing and boating are popular on the lake, and there are several campsites around the lakeshore.  The cafe and restaurant (Sailz) in Hawea village does excellent coffee and food as well!!

A nice photo of the lake at Iseltwald, Switzerland today on an early autumn day.  Switzerland has a wonderful system where citizens can (if they can raise 50 000 signatures) ask for a national vote on any law that they do not like.   There are 26 cantons in Switzerland, which function like small states.   One record that Switzerland holds is for the world’s longest staircase, which has 11 674 steps, alongside the Niesenbahn funicular.   Zurich often comes tops in the list of most liveable cities in the world, although Geneva also scores highly.   It also has the second highest life expectancy in the world (Japan is top).   The highest mountain is the Monte Rosa (Dufourspitze) at 4634m, although the Matterhorn is more famous.   It is said that Patek Philippe invented the world’s first wristwatch in 1868.   And Switzerland is also the home of the world’s best chocolate !!

Melbourne, Australia and St. Petersburg, Russia have the largest tram systems in the world, but the photo today shows a preserved tram in the southern Swedish city of Malmo.  Interesting to read that at one time, Milan had hearse trams which were used for funerals up until 1920.  Also, at one time, Melbourne had a dog car tram, which was used to transport dogs to the showgrounds.  As well as the usual restaurant trams, they have also been used as a mobile library ((Munchen, Germany) until 1970, and also as cargo trams.  Amsterdam has again experimented with using trams for moving goods inside the city.  And a few cities still use double-decker trams, such as Hong Kong.

The world population is around 6 billion people.  Every second 5 people are born and 2 people die, a net gain of 3 people. At this rate, the world population will double every 40 years and would be 12 billion in 40 years.   The United Nations estimate that world population will stabilize at 12 billion in 120 years, due to family planning cutting the number of births.  Shanghai is now the world’s largest city by population (14.8 million), with around 6800 people per square kilometre.  If you count the metro area then Tokyo has over 32 million people.

I could never understand why so many people stayed at the Quality Spa Resort in Norefjell.     For one thing, it is up on a hill, 13km from the nearest village of Noresund, and reached by driving up a toll road, including a section that is gravel.  Not only that, but in winter the drive up to the hotel is not easy, as the road is covered with snow and ice.     Then when people arrived at the hotel, they paid a small fortune to stay in what I would rate as an average 3 star hotel, and certainly nothing special.  I have stayed in many hotels that would knock spots of this hotel, but why do people drive up and pay high prices to stay here??   True, the hotel does have a small swimming pool and a limited skiing area around it, but if people travelled to the Swiss or Austrian Alps then they could find far better skiing areas.  Are the hotel rooms special at the Quality Spa Resort?  I would say not, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary.    And the food in the hotel?   Again, nothing that would make me drive up 13km into the hills for.   So if you are heading to Noresund then my advice would be to stay down in the valley, save some money but still be in the same area.

I am still waiting on a reply from KLM/Air France, from their ‘customer service’ section.   They just ignore email after email, and do not want to sort things out.  The good thing is that they will lose out, as no further bookings will be made with them until they do sort it out.   Bad customer service drives customers away, precisely what KLM/Air France are doing.  I look forward to reading about them in the bankruptcy courts.   I will vote with my money.

-89.2 degrees C. recorded at Vostok Station in 1983, or -82.5 degrees C recorded at Dome A, Antartica in 2005.   Kitilla, in the Lapland area of Finland has been down to  -51.5 degrees C  (in 1999).  Italy down to -48.3 degrees  at San Martino during 2010.   Even Australia has had some extreme cold, with -23 degrees being recorded at the Charlotte Pass in New South Wales during 1994.  And the record for the most snowfall during a year goes to Mt.
