Five A Day, and colourful – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Life is the art of drawing without an eraser”.

” Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work” (Thomas Edison).

Another colourful market scene today, taken in bright sunlight which really made the colours stand out.    The idea was to get in closer and fill the shot with colour.   Certainly worked here.  The photo was taken a few years ago in a market in Split, Croatia.   At that time, the photos were taken as JPEG photos, which had the advantage of taking up less space on memory cards and also being ready to use without lots of editing.

The disadvantage of JPEG though is that it is a way of storing photos that compresses and loses quality, so every time that the photo is edited then it loses even more quality.    The big advantage of taking photos in RAW is that you get in effect a digital ‘negative’ so that you can make pictures from it and also edit it without destroying the original image data.    Once you get used to editing RAW images, then they are almost as quick as using jpeg pictures, albeit with larger file sizes.

I guess that anybody over about 20 years old will have missed out on the thrill and excitement of waiting for that envelope of photos to come back through the post from the processing laboratory, or the excitement (and frustration!) of waiting for the local Kodak or Fuji shop to process the photos.    Even one hour was a long time to wait sometimes……but now it is all instant and digital.

On the Street, Korea – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day…” Do not ask what the meaning of life is, You define it”.

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”.

Street sellers in Gjeongju, Korea for the photo today.   Great light for this photo, with bright, even light and no hard shadows.   Just right to capture the colours of the scene.  And this photo was taken with a cheap, 12mp camera too, not an expensive DSLR.   In Korea, then number ‘4’ is very unlucky, so most buildings do not have a 4th floor.    Writing a letter in red ink is also bad form in Korea, as it either means that the recipient will die, or else will have bad luck.     Oddly enough, the official residence of the president of Korea is known as the Blue House.

Photo of the Day Thursday 21st February 2013 – Not the Quality Spa Resort Hotel, Norefjell.

Thought for the day….” What we see depends on what we look for ”

“Great men are rarely isolated mountain peaks, they are the summits of ranges”

“Time is the coin of life, only you can decide how you spend it”.

Another Ethiopia photo here, and from the capital Addis Ababa.  The name means ‘new flower’.  The city has a population of about 3.5 million people.  Not as hot as you might expect for an African capital, as the city lies at 2300m.     Africa currently has around 1.1 billion people, with Nigeria topping the list of population growth in Africa.   The African country of Niger tops the fertility lists, with (2012) women having 7.1 children per woman.   The largest African cities are Cairo, Egypt, with around 11 million people, and Lagos, with around 10 million.  The highest point in Africa is Mount Kilimanjaro, which reaches 5895m.  Sudan has twice as many (223) pyramids as Egypt.
